DigiLux 3 and Magenta

I hope to be able to answer that question from personal experience very soon, but I think it's safe to say that none of the M8's issues will plague the D3. Apart from the Leica-designed lens and Leica-tweaked firmware, the camera is essentially a Panasonic L1, which uses an entirely different kind of sensor and imaging engine. L1s have been out in the wild for several months now, and there are hundreds of L1 photos posted online. Check the Panasonic forum at dpreview.com.

Of course. the D3 is a much less expensive camera than the M8, and can't compete with the M8 on a lot of levels. Still, it should be an excellent mid-level DSLR and, as it's based on a reasonably well-proven ancestor, it should be trouble-free out of the box.

I'd be very interested to see some sample pics from your D3 when you get it. I have been considering this camera for a while but the only thing that really stops me is possible soft images. I've looked at many of the Panasonic L1 and Olympus E-330 images. The all seem very soft to me. The common denominator seems to be Panasonic's NMOS sensor. I just hope the D3 is not plagued with the same problem. -Norm

I have no clue what you mean by soft. You can set the camera processing for in camera sharpening or no sharp. I have the L1 and I have posted before that I have used the Canon pro gear and L series lens for a long time proir to buying the Panasonic, and I a so impressed that I have also ordered the 35-100 & 150mm 2.0 lens to add to this system. I have already purchased the 7-14mm 4.0.

I will post some images. I don't see soft in them.

According to several reviewers, the default sharpening setting of the L1 is very conservative, resulting in images that benefit from a touch of PP sharpening. According to those same reviewers, if you turn up the in-camera sharpening a bit, you get excellent results with no PP. This is all about JPGs, I assume.

I only Process images from the Raw Format, so I turn the Jpeg options to Small File size and I compress the Jpeg as much as possible so that I will have more room on the SD card for images. I might use the Jpegs just for a quick view of images, but I just delete them from the PC. I don't do any sharpening until one after the images have been converted to Raw, I don't let the Adobe Camera Raw Sharpen Image. Because if you run Noise Ninja, it really needs to be one of the first processes, if not the first.

I have been shooting with my DigiLux3 for about a week and find that complexion tones at 400 and higher shot on A in the highest jpeg fopr mat are not as true as with the Dlux 2 and D Lux three. I have not yet received my M8 so have only a few tests from a Leica demo.

That is why I posted the question. Leica states that they tweaked L1 so comparison with may not be valid.

Will post a couple shots later.

If you are shoting Jpeg, you can set the color, contrast and saturation using the varios Film settings in the camera. I have found no issues with the colors, but again I shot in Raw. Although the first job I did with the camera was all Jpeg, it was the second day I had the camera and it was a talent show, and all of the colors seemed fine.
