If that rumoured M9 finally arrives...

HI There

I shoot a great deal - every day - and I would estimate that I spend around 6 minutes a week waiting for my elderly USB2 card reader to download files . . . . at least, I don't wait, I go and get a glass of wine, read my email, walk the dog, go to the bog. Whatever.

As for the port, I can't imagine any situation when I'd use it . . . but if I really had a lead and no card reader and it's slow . . . then I'll pop down to the bar for a glass of wine, read my email etc. etc.

How irrelevant is this!? :)

Don't forget that mini DV tape camcorders use FW (Sony called it i-link). The first iMac DV was supplied with a FW cable to use with these camcorders and iMovie. The DV camcorders are disapearing. Only a few models are still available. Now camcorders use HDD or memory cards with USB connection. People still having such a mini DV camcorder do need a FW connection. Besides my Macs I also have a 4 year old Windows PC and that is equiped with a small FW connection, only usable with a camcorder.

Concerning the M8, I have no regrets that there is not a FW. I have the M8 now for half a year and never have used the USB connection. I always use a card reader: a very easy way of working. I use the card reader since I got my D2 last year.

I do not see a reason that Leica should bring FW to the M9. FW card readers exists but they are more expensive than USB card readers.

Concerning USB: it was Apple to drop other connections with the very first iMac. That iMac was only equiped with USB (1).

Best

Totally relevant! I was on a week long trip where I found that I only had the USB cable and no reader in my bag. Having the slow port was very convenient in this case as an emergency measure.

Oh, and I don't need much encouragement to hit the bar ... :p

That was the exact case with me, what made me post this... Sooner or later we all end up in a similar situation. I tried to d/l photos through a miniusb cable that was lying around (the only one I could find, and now that I think of it, maybe this was the bottleneck had anyone tried downloading a bunch -not one or two- of photos to test cables?) After about 30mins of red led flashing I stopped the process...!

I like your concept of rubbish = no firewire :). You need a high bandwidth link when you are accessing a high speed device, but not when you are accessing a SD card, even the latest and greatest. It won't change anything to have a firewire port as long as the USB port is properly designed (which, we are in agreement, is not the case on the current M8).

No, with rubish I mean all those millions of sausage laptops using 15" screens that go under $500 most are noname assemblies as well...

What is the idea lying behind the M8 ? Are you suggesting an exclusive camera for the rich or tech savvy ?

A camera that you need to use your brain to capture photos, and not some Chinese cpus using questionable software -even if they're accurate-

Also, a mostly mechanical camera for which we should all admire, because it is not easy to solve today's engineering problems without reverting to digital logic (rangefinding)

Do you disagree with what the M8 is and represents?

If the external connection was wireless (802.11n), assuming reasonable proximity with the wireless router (following the same line of thinking, anyone without a 802.11n router has a rubbish network :)) you could reach peak throughput on most of SD cards without the need for plugging a cable. It would require them to design it in a way where the shell of the camera doesn't shield the signal, but that would be way superior to any form of cable connection and remove that ugly plastic filled port from my beautiful camera.

I'd take that over esata, usb3, firewire800 or faster any day, even if it was a bit slower.

I prefer the wifi+ n(draft) interface more than anything. It is even more straightforward and faster than all the rest and you can have some great approaches with some sort of internet apps with this, or directly use an iphone as storage -all these are great ideas- but this means they need to redesign a lot of their camera m/b

I wouldn't mind keeping this USB port if in the end we manage to find out where the problem is: I refuse to believe Leica chose USB1 interface over USB2..

Does anyone actually use the camera port? I'd rather have it left off, or at the very least put it under the baseplate.

Leica do for diagnostics. Also if you stick it under the baseplate then you wouldn't be able to use the M9 tethered on a tripod.
