Anybody use 24 elmarit without hood?

Yanidel, unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, it is not quite that simple as the loss of contrast from flare is often not uniform across the frame. Better to use a hood and control your contrast in processing, whether film or digital.

It is a good point, yet I do so much post processing that really any impact of flare or uneven contrast is of lesser importance compared to the shots missed because the right bottom corner wasn't correctly framed ;)

Buy a 55mm wide hood from Heavystar, works well, I use it on my 21 and 24 Elmarits and first version MATE. I also use the 46mm equivalent on my 28mm Summicron and 35mm Summilux.

Hi Mark (and/or others who may be able to help) I read this with interest but was unable to find Heavystar on e-Bay. If I do a full Google search I get lots of forum references but not the company itself. Do you have a link to hand?

Thanks

Robert

Hi Rob,

Hi Mark (and/or others who may be able to help) I read this with interest but was unable to find Heavystar on e-Bay. ...

Do you have a link to hand?

We can't give eB link on this forum. But make a search for seller and you'll find it.

BTW, i don't like their hoods, they are screw-in. Make the lens a lot longer and in case of bad luck (hit some where), you are in trouble.

Yanidel, I just noticed you are in Paris. Of course that changes the situation for you as Parisians "do everything with flare!" ;);)

LOL ... you haven't seen the weather lately here ... though to get flare anyways ...

since i started this thread i get lot's of great advice but i end up buying 18 super elmar instead!!:o the coverage is great .. the hood is really really beautiful.. much better looking lens than the 24. the price is a bit cheaper too.

Chaikit, congratulations on your purchase. Use it well. I am glad you find the hood 'really beautiful', but do remember it is supposed make your images really beatuful so don't forget to use it! ;)

I was going to go for the 24 but decided that I may as well get the 21.

It's a decision I too have not regretted. It's a great lens - even on M8 it has a nice wide field of view and I have no problem using it without an EVF.

I personally find the supplied hood excellent - although I don't use it all the time. For instance, if I go out and want the camera to be as compact as possible (with family or whatever) then I don't use the hood. I have not had any flare problems yet, I have to say. If I go out just to shoot photo's then I take the hood just in case anyway - simple.
