lars_bergquist Posted August 14, 2009 Share #41 Posted August 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Early this spring I bought a mint pre-M8 Elmarit-M at one of the LP auctions in Stockholm. The reason for its pristine state was soon evident: It had not been used much because it misfocused badly (clearly outside the tolerances of film too). I contacted Solms and and was told that they needed my M8 for reference. So camera and lens went south while I put some film into my M4-P. This took close to two months! But they returned from the ride with the lady inside -- the lens was now breathtakingly sharp. It cost me about what I paid for the lens, but that was no more than about €400 (that should have made me smell something fishy from the outset). On the whole, I am satisfied. It was a long wait, but the delay was of course not due to their poring over and p... on the lens all the time. They have a backlog. he job is highly skilled and they cannot afford to kepp staff tapping their fingers and rolling their big toes just to handle temporary surges in demand. Like spring weather ... Advertisement Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Hi lars_bergquist, Take a look here I dislike lame excuses. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted August 14, 2009 Share #42 Posted August 14, 2009 Apologies. I never meant to imply that Leica made all their own glass, but we were told that this did at one time have their own facility. This was obviously the research lab to which you refer. lars_bergquist Posted August 14, 2009 Share #43 Posted August 14, 2009 Well this has been a persistent photographic urban legend. And for a long time Ernst Leitz did not exactly exert themselves to deny it, either. But a legend it is. The old man
