mwilliamsphotography Posted November 11, 2006 Share #21 Posted November 11, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Guy, you crack me up. You are a freakin' Leica fanatic ... and I mean that in a positive way man. One thing I've often wondered when everyone is talking about these 35mm sized DSLRs (or now rangefinders) in conjunction with commercial work (other than event stuff) ... with all the cash you've sunk into them why not a MF digital back? You want something better than a DMR? I've got 3 digital backs here that'll blow away anything with a 35mm film gate ... all sporting Zeiss glass. I've seen your work, any one of them would be perfect. Just curious. (Not trying to irritate you, just changing the subject that's now become an obsession ; -)
Advertisement Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 Hi mwilliamsphotography, Take a look here Enough!!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
shk331 Posted November 11, 2006 Share #22 Posted November 11, 2006 we are witnessing the - complicated - birth of what is to become a legendary camera. Peter Let this not forget, if this happen it will happen not for money or escaping financial crisis. We have to create the great pictures - and this will be the tool for it! If something is leaking most of the Leica funs will put their heart into it. Guy, you’re in the right track for it
Guest guy_mancuso Posted November 11, 2006 Share #23 Posted November 11, 2006 I am still on the fence with MF , I like the Aptus backs but the bodies they go on or dead sytems you have to buy into make me nervous. Than again leica scares the crap out of me. LOL
Bob Ross Posted November 11, 2006 Share #24 Posted November 11, 2006 We do love drama, Guy. Just imagine what this forum and your life would be like, if Leica said, "We found a problem or two, so we are delaying the release of the M8 to April 2007, after PMA 2007. We appreciate your patience." .......now, that would be dull and some other things....enjoy...LOL Bob
imported_peter_m Posted November 11, 2006 Share #25 Posted November 11, 2006 I hope everyone realizes i am having a little fun here , which we really need Good point Guy Why don't all you M8 owners go out tomorrow and just have some fun with the M8, don't worry about blobs and streaks just go out and use it and you all get back tomorrow night and post some of your pictures. Jamie Roberts Posted November 11, 2006 Share #26 Posted November 11, 2006 Kurt i can already tell even with the color issues the M is going to be better than the DMR when it gets fixed. I can't believe i just said that. Guy--you're right. Once they fix this it will put the DMR to shame. Ok--now I'm posting my little test so I can go shoot instead!! Clay--I like my 5d. But I like this better, as you're going to see!

larry Posted November 11, 2006 Share #28 Posted November 11, 2006 My God, the number of angry people posting in this forum (many for the first time) leads me to believe that the dpreview server has melted down and the restless masses have found a new place to play. Thanks Guy for your attempt to calm the waters. Larry
Guest guy_mancuso Posted November 11, 2006 Share #29 Posted November 11, 2006 It is a great idea one little reason why we bought this was to shoot it. Plus it will take our minds off of the issues. BTW don't show these to your wives, mine looked up at me and asked if she could shoot it. Answer of course no honey just far to difficult for you. Okay i lied:D
mwilliamsphotography Posted November 11, 2006 Share #30 Posted November 11, 2006 Did you say "Chum the waters" Larry? Just kidding. Lots of MF out there Guy. You can buy a box full of MF bodies for what this M8 costs and toss them in the trash after each job if you want. The H cameras are actually very good (those you don't toss : -) Slap some Zeiss on them and you're good to go (CF adapter). I've made 5 foot wide prints from the H2D/39. Steep entry price, but once in it's a lot easier. The Aptus is great. ISO 800 is very good. I'm shooting a job tomorrow with the Aptus 75 on the RZ ... then on the Mamiya AFDII using Zeiss FE glass. Bodies are just anchors to hang the backs and lenses on. e-mail me if you get serious about it. Peter A from Australia (remember him?) ... he has an Aptus 75 also and we exchange info from time to time ... he's using his on an ALPA. ( Just continuing to change the subject here folks ; -)
gogopix Posted November 12, 2006 Share #31 Posted November 12, 2006 Has Aptus (Leaf I guess) fixed the center crease problem? and yes Zeiss FE glass is fantastic. I use it on my contax 645....with my P45.. ok....put your dukes up! LOL

If I were a full-time pro, I'd go MF/digital back, no hesitation. (For me the M8 is, hopefully, a street camera) Actually, I saw a programme on Sally Mann recently (yes, Guy, what a shock, some photographers are women), and she uses a LF. The detail on her b&w's just blew me away. If anyone knows which equipment she uses, I'd love to know, out of interest.
robo48 Posted November 12, 2006 Share #33 Posted November 12, 2006 I am still on the fence with MF , I like the Aptus backs but the bodies they go on or dead sytems you have to buy into make me nervous. Than again leica scares the crap out of me. LOL Guy, I like you, was one of the early cheerleaders for the DMR and absolutely love working with it. I also have the P45 Back for my Contax 645. Your comment about the dead systems cannot be argued with. I decided to purchase two additional Contax bodies to protect my investment in the P45. As much as I like the DMR I must admit the digital MF is a pleasure to work with. I am patiently waiting for an M8 and will gladly purchase one as soon as it is available. gumshoecamus Posted November 12, 2006 Share #34 Posted November 12, 2006 I love sally mann -- she's great. I use a hassy 503 + CFV. compared to 5D (I used to own) and R-D1, the range and tone is extraordinary. did try a leaf aptus 65 -- really amazing noise performance but the slow back interface and leaf capture made me think it is a tiny bit flaky. marc, what's your experience ? also tried P30 -- lovely resolution, seems a bit more gritty than aptus (that's prob the software) and I preferred it. am I the only person who finds C1 just a tiny bit plasticky ? I use raw developer mostly (as well as C1 and flexcolor) and love it. if anyone has any experience of alpha do tell, especially handheld. I am intrigued... dave

mwilliamsphotography Posted November 12, 2006 Share #39 Posted November 12, 2006 Don't know anything about a "center crease " with the Aptus. Super easy user interface with the back while shooting in the field. Picked up how to use the software in minutes ... but for volumne production the RAW files are supported by Adobe Camera RAW and open directly in ARC. This lets me dump files from different cameras into one file and sort by time shot. Screen could be better in bright sunlight and file loading could be faster ... which has now been adjusted with the 75s which I'll be getting soon. Fastest buffer load of any MF back. IMO, based on using them all, the best one of the lot is the Imacon. They're doing stuff with the softwear that boggles the mind. LCD screen sucks compared to the Aptus, but it's mostly there for a histogram reading. Camera's fast. Real fast compared to my old Contax 645. It's the way to go IMHO. Getting better and better. The files, even from a 22 meg Imacon back, are stunning. The real sleeper of MF backs is the CFV. None of us can figure out how the files can be so good from a 16 meg back. They really got that one right, right out of the gate. Now back to our regularly scheduled whine session concerning the M8. Boo Hoo, I have to carry that brick of a Canon through a few more weddings. Waaaaa waaaaa waaaaa.
