michael friedberg Posted July 4, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 4, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just took this photo last night, and set the shutter speed to 1/15th of a second. But the camera data shows the following: 1/11s f/2.8 at 28.0mm iso640 full exif Does anyone know why I would get 1/11th of a second? Was the image really shot at 1/15th of a second and is the camera wrong? I obviously can't manually set the camera to 1/11th of a second, and my M8 wasn't set on auto. The image, I would think, came out fine and the difference between what I set and what I got (or what the camera reported) is minimal, I guess. But --what gives? Is it a problem? Thanks in advance. Advertisement Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 Hi michael friedberg, Take a look here 1/15th or 1/11th of a second?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mjh Posted July 4, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 4, 2009 The EXIF standard specifies two fields for storing shutter speed data, ExposureTime and ShutterSpeedValue. Those two values often differ (slightly); which one is closer to the actual value is anyone’s guess. (There are also two EXIF fields for storing the aperture and those two values can differ as well; obviously, this is of little concern in the case of the M8.) michael friedberg Posted July 4, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted July 4, 2009 The EXIF standard specifies two fields for storing shutter speed data, ExposureTime and ShutterSpeedValue. Those two values often differ (slightly)... Thanks very much for your reply! Do you know why the two "fields" differ? It seems to me that the shutter speed value --presumably what I set-- is "off", that is, in this instance the shutter was slower than I intended. I view the difference between 1/15 and 1/11 as -36.363419% --which to me may not be minor but with post processing it's easily correctible. I suspect the shutter mechanism isn't perfectly calibrated. Just a guess. Regards and thanks again.
mustafasoleiman Posted July 4, 2009 Share #4 Posted July 4, 2009 maybe the speed dial was accidentally set between the 15 and 8 clicks?
erl Posted July 5, 2009 Share #5 Posted July 5, 2009 My understanding is that the shutter speeds are 'infinitelty' variable within the range of the camera, when set to 'Auto.' I would say that the exif of 1/11th shown is likely to be more accurate, ie the actual speed used, but of course, cannot be manually set. I understand this to be the case with other cameras too. My Hasselblad 203FE works this way, I am pretty sure. Others may have a more precise explanation than mine.
michael friedberg Posted July 5, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted July 5, 2009 Thanks, again, for everyone's replies. However: a. I didn;t know I could set the shutter speed knob for intermediate speeds between click stops. I thought I set it as 1/15 as shown on the EXIF info, b. While speeds may be infinitely variable when set to auto, this setting was manual. Dougg Posted July 5, 2009 Share #7 Posted July 5, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) The M8 shutter speed dial does have intermediate click stops between marked shutter speeds. If working fast it is entirely possible to move the dial one click, say from 1/8, assume you're on 1/15 but indeed be on the intermediate click... which would be about 1/11 sec.
