NoAlbany Posted July 1, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 1, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, anyone know anything about whether support will continue for these cameras, ala updates, etc? I have the L1 for two years now (a stellar tool that I love immensely) and worry a little when I look around or at the Panasonic web site and, I dunno, something tells me that it's a bit of a dead subject. Thanks

ASpes Posted July 1, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 1, 2009 Hi, anyone know anything about whether support will continue for these cameras, ala updates, etc? I have the L1 for two years now (a stellar tool that I love immensely) and worry a little when I look around or at the Panasonic web site and, I dunno, something tells me that it's a bit of a dead subject. Thanks If you mean system evolution, guess the support for L1-D/3 has stopped a long ago with the v2 firmware, and since then unfortunately both firms look like they have dropped all their plans for this line. At Panasonic they now seem like putting all their best efforts into the new micro 4/3, while at Leica they are possibly to follow suit if the past is of any reference. Marketing rules once more, especially these days when they fight for survival. Anyway 4/3 is quite alive and far from dead, m4/3 is a pretty interesting solution but will not push it away as it looks like having (or maybe making for) a rather different marketing target. Unless Olympus hits an unlikely financial crackdown they will go on and support 4/3 for a long time, so plenty of options in that range for our cameras. As for me I just bought another Oly SHG lense and enjoying it on my D/3. "Don't worry, be happy" as old Bobby McFerrin was singing ... Just my 2(euro)cent of course. audidudi Posted July 2, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 2, 2009 I have both an L1 and a G1, and IMO, the G1 truly shines with the L1 kit lens on it (at least when you're shooting from a tripod, as I usually am, because it's manual-focus only), so even if Panasonic/Leica are no longer supporting the the L1/D3 body, your lens will continue to be useful. :-)
