Why is there a difference in the number of available pictures when using the same card and the mega-pixels are set the same, ie, both 6 million?

I just got the new V-Lux last night and also own a D-Lux 2.

Thanks,

Carlos

Maybe different JPG compressions? Try shooting the same shot, then compare file sizes between the cameras.

Just a guess.

Could also be a different way of using the card. Maybe one of the cameras requires more headroom. Does the V-Lux 1 accept SDHC cards? That might require more address space or some such.

As you're aware, the figure is just an approximation anyway.

But a very interesting question.

The V-Lux does accept the SDHC and multimedia cards. What are those? Guess you can tell I'm still learning.

Here's a fun answer from my camera store. "The V-Lux is a bigger camera. If you squashed a big dog down to the size of a poddle, you'd still have a big dog." Looks like I have a LOT to learn about cameras AND dogs, lol.

This camera isn't in the league of the M-8 and I'm hoping people don't find major issues with it. I'm VERY pleased with playing with it last night at home.

Carlos--

Forget Multimedia cards. They are extremely slow and were replaced by SD.

Because of the way the SD card was designed to be addressed, most cameras that came out up to a year or so can't address any size SD card larger than 2 GB.

SDHC is a new standard, Secure Digital High Capacity, that uses a different addressing system and can be made much larger in storage capacity than SD cards.

I don't understand anything about what that actually means, except that SDHC is the later standard and that it only applies when you're looking for cards bigger than 2 GB.

The V-Lux looks to me like a wonderful camera. Enjoy!
