vla Posted June 22, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) good evening everybody, when i got my m8 in january this year i also bought leica's protector half-case. i found ergonomics useful and thought it would provide some additional protection for the body. after 6 months i still like the ergonomics but i am no longer sure about protection. the synthetic leather coating shows obvious signs of wear (two stripes on front side in proximity of the lugs) which seem to be caused by the protector - there i can find the corresponding signs of wear. i don't really mind my m8 getting scratched (after all, it's a tool, albeit a very special one ...), but i really feel irritated by the fact that a protection cover damages the object it is supposed to protect. i vaguely remember someone else reporting this problem on this forum. so i'm just wondering - how many of you out there still use the leica protector? markus ps - yes i know, there are luigi's wonderful half cases. i nearly bought one but decided to save the money for a new lens and continue using the leica protector ... Shootist Posted June 22, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 22, 2009 I think there was a problem with the original protector Leica sold, it cause wear to the body. Leica has updated it. Could be you bought, were sold, the version 1 of the protector and you should contact Leica about it.

I had the exact same problem with the original Leica half case but I traded in the M8 for the M8.2, thru one of the member from the forum, I bought the Mr. Zhou's half case since last Oct and so far very good. it comes in black or brown. it is around........a little over us$100-. I highly recommended this one but I can't locate his e mail address. may be someone from this forum can give it to you. good luck DL
Nicoleica Posted June 22, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 22, 2009 I use the Leica Camera Protector. I have seen no signs of any wear or damage caused by it on my camera. Mine is the version with the buttons at the rear, rather than the one shown on the Leica website, which has the buttons at the front.
epand56 Posted June 22, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 22, 2009 I have a Luigi's half case in a wonderful dark tan colour. It is great and protect the camera very well. I understand you want to save the money for another lens, but IMO the money spent in a Luigi's half case is very good spent.
Iansky Posted June 22, 2009 Share #6 Posted June 22, 2009 I also use the current Leica Protector half case on my M8.2 and have not seen any signs of wear or marking.
RockyIII Posted June 22, 2009 Share #7 Posted June 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have the newer model protector on my black M8.2 and like it very well. I have seen no evidence of rubbing. My one small complaint would be that the back could have a better fit, as it flares out a bit at the top corners. Guest JasonG Posted June 22, 2009 Share #8 Posted June 22, 2009 Hiho, I too had the 1st design of the protector and the stiffeners in the front were rubbing the camera body. I contacted Leica (UK) and sent back the protector, a handful of weeks later I received a new design one with the pop-studs on the back. This version no longer rubs and I'm very happy. vla Posted June 22, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted June 22, 2009 to all who replied - thank you so much for your explanations, this resolves the issue. i was sold the version with the buttons to the front. as jason rightly points out it's the stiffeners leaving their mark on the body. i'll contact my leica shop tomorrow ... markus
rycm Posted June 23, 2009 Share #10 Posted June 23, 2009 I don't use the protector, but to avoid scuff while carrying it I use the neoprene case. It's somewhat difficult to remove, but I use it for transit points.
epand56 Posted June 23, 2009 Share #11 Posted June 23, 2009 I don't use the protector, but to avoid scuff while carrying it I use the neoprene case. It's somewhat difficult to remove, but I use it for transit points. I use it to, but find much more difficult to put the camera inside than to remove the case. Anyway, it is a great tool

Laowai Posted June 24, 2009 Share #13 Posted June 24, 2009 My "new design" protector rubs the housing at the points of contact, I can see the brass shining through after 2 months of use already. Nothing is perfect...
falkk Posted June 25, 2009 Share #14 Posted June 25, 2009 I am using Luigi-Half case too. So far really no problem. The inner material is soft suede and he put some studs in the right places. Very good grip, hanging-flap on the back to show the screen and allow free access to the buttons. I have M8, so I was told to use the protective screen, but with the hanging-flap, I do not need this anymore. On the outside very strong beautiful leather. lars_bergquist Posted June 25, 2009 Share #15 Posted June 25, 2009 The Leica protector fails to protect what really needs protection -- the rear of the camera. Luigi's halfcase has a fold down flap for when you need access. And in the meantime, it keeps you from Addictive Chimping.
