Still ready for my M8 - and ordering IR filters

I, for one, am still taking deep breaths and waiting impatiently for my M8.

I am preparing to order IR filters for my lenses -- I just noted that there doesn't seem to be a way to mount a filter on my 90mm f2.0 lens.

As I stated in another thread, this extra sensitivity may be a present from Leica. If it can be tamed, then we also have a camera that is useful for IR photography. There are several inquiries on the Forum from D2 owners asking why they can't do any IR photography (the D2, of course, does not record the IR spectrum).

In one thread, Sean Reid mentioned that he ordered B+W IR filters, with a factor of 1.0 (that is, no light loss from use of the filter).

In another thread, B+W 489's have been mentioned.

I went looking for B+W filters and note that the 486 has a factor of 1.0, but that the 489 has a factor of 1.2.

Who has ordered these filters and which one, please?

Thanks.

Bill:

From what I can tell from the B&H web site the 489 is an IR pass filter and the 486 is an IR blocking filter.

I just ordered two of the 486 flavor from Adorama as B&H doesn't have them in stock.

Carsten, It's exactly that book that confuses me. It must be the translation from German to English that throws me. I had the same trouble with the description in Leica's literature concerning the cover glass and vignetting.

Sean, thanks for the info.

I have just ordered some 486's. Now, where's my camera.

I spoke with my dealer today and he said the rep told him (this time!!!) that Leica thot they had enough cameras in the current shipment to cover orders thru January. He was wrong (what else is new -- he never has the correct info).

However, the current version from the rep is that it's on the way.

No wonder Leica has problems. Either the rep that handles my dealer hasn't awakened from a 40-year nap, or the sales org keeps him in the dark. In either case, since I ordered my camera 2 YEARS AGO, I feel it should be here.

Regards to all,

This is bad. I have been in line for an M8 for more than six months and have laid up a hefty down payment. Tonight however I put that M8 on hold until Leica can fix the problems, including the crazy IR sensitivity. Filters? There are lenses that do not take filters, including their own brand new W-A Tri-Elmar (unless you go for that silly adapter scheme).

Back to my primitive old M4-P.

Bill, read the assesment here which basically says the M8 is not very useful for IR photography.

Hans, thanks for the reference. I had seen the material from Sean, but Michael's info is useful and confirms my thoughts. This camera WILL do IR photog (as opposed to the D2, for instance).

We're going to see how well the 486 filters do.

I would report back, but, as I've posted, I don't have the camera, yet, in spite of ordering it 2 years ago.

Hi Guy,

I'm not sure. I went with the B+W because I prefer that company generally. I should have them by 10 AM tomorrow. If they check out, I'm using them for a shoot the next day.

Cheers,

Sean
