Magenta virus!

A rather long winded example, but relevant!

I came back from a shoot today preferring the Nikon D2X rather than using the Leica M8 because of all these potential problems shown on this site, after downloading the images I needed to recalibrate my screen for colour (Spyder 2), so did this and reviewed the images that I just shot; was I shocked to see that there was a magenta cast in many of the blacks just like to M8 examples shown here, it looked like the exact cast problem has spread like a virus to my Nikon!!!

Figuring things out, it must have been the monitor profile, I recalibrated the screen again and everything was back to normal (not sure how this happened though)

Anyhow, the moral of the story is simple; this really showed to me the M8 magenta problem could all possibly be fixed by firmware (better in-camera profiling), its evident from the M8's white balance with version 1.06, on whatever settings that it colour is just way off sync, Leica must have seen that one.

The last word from here in Hong Kong when I spoke to the Leica distributors 4 weeks ago was that there was a big problem with WB that needed to be fixed, that was then with firmware 1.06, therfore I'm now thinking that maybe this is possibly the magenta issue they where dealing with then.

This would explain why there has been no comment on it as yet by Leica as they are still dealing with its release, the units that they allowed to get out the door ahead of their planned schedule, Leica probably thought could be just easily upgraded by firmware at a later stage, but allows those so keen to get their hands on it, a chance at least to work with it before newer firmware update as the problem only appears in special circumstances. Ofcourse I could be entirely wrong and Leica might need to do a hardware change or something to the UV, but perhaps what I said helps a few early adopters to sleep a little less worried at night!!!
