M'Ate Posted November 10, 2006 Share #61 Posted November 10, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica is a lame duck already. If they don't come up with a good solution to this by mid next-week, they can begin to file for bankruptcy. It is quite a desaster not to have noticed these two serious IQ problems - which appear in excactly those situations which this camera is built for: low light with a couple of highlights (streaking) with a lot of people wearing black. If that was my company I would IMMEDIATELY fire the guys responsible for development / final testing, apologize to my customers and offer a complete and generous solution: Come on, you seriously don't think that the guy responsible for developing and testing this wonderful, but unfinished M8 is responsible for releasing it on the market ? That guy knows what he was doing and couldn't fix it in the time frame available. Why on earth do you think the "publish no photos with this level of firmware" embargo was in place for so long ?? Why do you think that the reviewers and sales reps demo cameras didn't find the issue - because they were selected as best performers perhaps? Sorry, but I don't believe the the poor genius who developed this, and has the job of sorting the fix out quickly, is the guy that's created the problem for us. There's a CEO and a Head of Marketing that's had all the info and pressed the button. In July, the Country CEO asked "is there a market for a 17 mb B&W M8". I posted that 2 weeks ago on this forum. Leica knew in July and for whatever reason, whatever market, financial, customer or supplier pressure they had to go ahead and let the solution catch them up. The alternative must have been quite undesireable. Don't blame the engineer - he's the good guy.

mwilliamsphotography Posted November 10, 2006 Share #62 Posted November 10, 2006 In one way I am totally with Victor on this. I have the M8 in my possession and can afford to be somewhat patient since I have not paid one thin dime to anyone yet ... not even an early deposit. I also have in my possession just about every other digital solution available ... including an Imacon 949 scanner should I feel compelled to use a M ... so, I am hardly "wringing my hands". It's a simple, cold, calculating and analytical evaluation of a tool ... detached from all the emotional baggage in favor or against. I find either extreme to be useless posturing ... but to be expected I guess given the attachment we all have to this great brand. We had all hoped the launch of this camera would be the defining milestone for Leica into the future. What will define them now is how they handle the issues. gogopix Posted November 10, 2006 Author Share #63 Posted November 10, 2006 I think this thread has served its purpose, in suggesting at emporaryfix, and indicating a pssible longer term solution. I absolutely sypathize with the professional who needs to think workflow, and will likely use other tools, at least for now. What is inappropriate is to use these threads to lobby against a company. An honest consumer will make his choices, and vote with his feet, and pocketbook, NOT his fingers and keyboard. I suggest some of these 'magenta threads getclosed before we all forget where we posted. But thank you to those who make this available, and especially to the critics, like Marc who can make constructive comments andsuggestions, rather than flaming statements Thanks esp to Peter, who actually have much better skill at this approach. And thanks to all. I am relatively new here, and my purpose is to learn from the more experienced - and I have. regards victor
