Is there any comparison between 28cron and 35lux ASPH?

I'm looking for an apple vs oranges comparison between these two gems... i.e. something concerning resolution, bokeh etc... did you know of something like that on the web or on this forum? I can't seem to find it.

thanks

Maurizio

The 35mm Summilux suffers from focus shift as the aperture is stopped down. Personally, given a choice of the two, I'd go for the 28mm.

Thank you Steve.

I presonally use(d) both lenses, but I was tryin' to get a clearer idea of the way they draw, leaving apart the FOV arguments.

I love the cron but i miss the extra stop of the lux.

I know of the focus shift issues regarding the 35lux ASPH as well...:(

I have both and would never sell my 35, but my 28 is up for sale now. To me, the 35 Lux is the perfect M8 lens and the focus shift is not even close to being a big deal. I have a review of it on my site with crops at each aperture showing the shift. As for look, no way the 28 can get the look of the 35.

Just my opinions of course :)

The comparison is that they are both made by Leica:D

The 28/2 ASPH in a sort of poll a few months ago was considered as the no.2 "best" lens made by Leica (50lux ASPH was no.1), no. 3 must have been the 35lux but I would have to dig around to find the thread.

Anyway it is an impossible question to answer except that the 35 will have a much more pronounced bokeh/shallow depth of field than the 28, for reasons of focal length and the 1 stop extra aperture. So the 35 if you are looking for bokeh, the 28 if you want a classic focal length on the M8 (equivalent to the favorite 35mm/filmM combination). Note: feel free to disagree with this, but I propose we do not start that discussion (again - n+1-th time, where n=large).

Personally I believe there are two "obvious" lens sequences (unless you want to buy them all):

#1: 18, 28, 50, 90

#2: 24, 35, 75, 135

I am aiming for #1 at a gentle pace.

Some, not all, 35 LUX ASPH's suffer from focus shift. My sample is spot on!

Great review Steve. I also owned both and ended up selling the 28. The 28/2 ASPH is a great lens but other than focal length it draws much like the much less expensive 35/2 ASPH.

And I agree, the focus shift "issue" is a big beat up. Some are affected. Some are perfect. And if it is an issue it will only affect focus between f2.8 and f4.0.

Either way, once you shoot KING LUX at f1.4 there's no going back to the dark side!

I agree that the look/drawing of the 28/F2 is a little closer to the 35/F2 ASPH than it is to the Summilux but that is a weird way of making the point. Are we meant to infer that the 28/F2 drawing is inferior because it resembles a cheaper lens? I have all three lenses (35 Summilux, 35 Summicron, and 28 Summicron) and would say the 28 is the 'best' of the bunch. The 28's drawing has a beautiful balance between sharpness and contrast. It just happens that I use the 35 lenses more because I prefer the narrower FOV.

Just a couple of shots...

I did the same shot with the 28cron and then with the 35lux. Suddenly I cropped the cron's shot as to almost match the 35FOV...

it could be nice to hear what you prefer of these two shots...

(sorry for this extremely boring and unscientific thread).

Guess who's who... (don't cheat with the exif info);)

(first full frame, then 100% crops)

Steve,

That review is so damn good, screw you for making me now want one and spending cash :)

ps.. anyone know why they haven't made a 28 lux? it's the odd one out it seems.

1, 3 Lux

2, 4 Cron

3 and 4 are hard to compare at this size due to different exposures.

Did I get this right?

ok Maurizio..... let us know!

I use both and on the M8 the 28 cron is my "35" for more environmental portraits where I want a bit of the surroundings and the 35 lux is my "normal 50" for tighter shots / portraits.

I find them a bit too close for it to be optimal and am thinking of getting a 24/2.8 instead of the 28 cron but am worried that the loss of a full stop will be problematic.

I find the focus-shift on the 35 lux to be a hassle but for my tighter portraits it is not a problem. more on the 3-5 meter shots.

I am very curious to which is which Maurizio!

During the recent Forum meeting in Solms, Leica M product manager Stefan Daniels admitted that the focus shift with the 1.4/35 ASPH was a problem, and they were considering a replacement.

Some people seem to be more than happy with the lens regardless. I have most experience with the 2.0/28, and this is really a superb lens.

The best selling lens for the M system at present is the 2.8/28 ASPH, accoring to Stefan.

Alexander, Ecar is right 1-3 is the lux while 2-4 is the cron.

The cron being a lower contrast lens has rendered more detail in the shadows than the lux, the latter ( it's just my guess) has more vignetting at FA so that may fool someone to believe that the exposure is somehow not exact between these two shots. Matter of fact I used manual exposure to compensate precisely the loss of a full stop for the cron.

It almost seems as the difference between is less than that full stop... Evidently this should be just an impression due to the different contrast rendering of these two gems.

Ciao!

Maurizio, I don't know why you ask if you have both. Just use them!

I also have both, and I find the 28 sharper, but not harsh, and the 35 more dreamy wide open, but also a little fuzzy around the edges in comparison. I rarely use the 28, but really like the 35 focal length on the M8. I am keeping the 28 for when I get an M9. My favorite lens is the 50 Lux ASPH, and the 28 Cron ASPH will be the perfect companion on full-frame. My 35 Lux ASPH will probably remain my most-used lens until the M9, and then it will probably live on my M8. I don't need the 35mm view much.

Hi Steve,

Nice blog, and review of the C-Sonnar.

For your type of photography (people, family, a few metres away) on your blog, focus shift may not come into play.

For those wanting to use the RF and pre-visualize where the DOF in front of, and behind the subject focused on will be, focus shift is important.

I'm glad you like the CV/Zeiss Sonnar more than the Lux 50 asph, sure saves a lot of money!!
