spylaw4 Posted November 8, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 8, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) As an aside from the furore and veritable avalanche of threads about the M8....! I passed by RG Lewis (in London) this evening and saw a Digilux 3 box in the window - so it appears that at least one UK dealer has got delivery of what one might assume is a production model. Those interested form an orderly queue!
Advertisement Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Hi spylaw4, Take a look here D3 UK arrival? . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Enrique Santa Posted November 9, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 9, 2006 Hi Brian, here in Madrid I have no news. I´m testing every week two Leica centers. It seems that it will arrive in the midle of november.....my birthday is 20, so it will be a good present. I hope Leica has managed noise reduction in a different way that Panasonic. Any case I think shooting in raw there will be no problems, and the lens are super.
Ferry Man Posted November 9, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 9, 2006 Hi there, newbie here (currently a Digilux-2 user). Good news for me. I've had a Digilux-3 on order for a few months now and yesterday I got the call. I had previously put down a 10% deposit with 'The Classic Camera' store in London and I'm told I was number one on their list. They received their first batch of 3's yesterday and mine was shipped out for delivery today. Hopefully with me soon.... If it arrives as promised I'll post some images later. I understand the dealer got less cameras than pre-orders, so some others will have to wait a little longer. Also Leica hadn't got all their act together so, much as they'd have like to have sold me a case etc, they are not in stock yet. Cheers, Paul. Enrique Santa Posted November 9, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 9, 2006 Lucky man Paul¡¡¡. Would you like to post some raw files at differents iso levels?. Thank you very much:D
spylaw4 Posted November 9, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted November 9, 2006 Yes please - plenty of demo shots in various lightings - you know the sort of thing !! Enjoy it! I wonder when the R adapter will be available - I heard a £150 quoted as the cost?
Ferry Man Posted November 9, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 9, 2006 OK. It arrived as promised. Very nice. First impression, yes, a bit bulkier (than a Digilux 2), yes, a bit heavier, but on the whole superb to handle. Fits my hands better. I like the grip and bigger lens. The viewfinder is better than I expected and I find focus easier in manual mode and quicker and more confident in auto. The stabilisation in the lens is very effective, allows you to use very slow shutter speeds. Paul.
Enrique Santa Posted November 9, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 9, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Very, very nice.Thank you for your pics...I can imagine you open the box . Ferry Man Posted November 9, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 9, 2006 Interestingly the box shows the descriptive (in several places) 'silver'. A prelude to a black version perhaps?
Ferry Man Posted November 9, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 9, 2006 I didn't get a chance to take any shots in daylight. I'll try and take some tests over the weekend. Meanwhile here's a somewhat primitive comparison between the Digilux 2 and Digilux 3. Shots were taken indoors, under typical halogen lights and with bounce flash from the camera. Both at 60mm eqivalent. Both at 100 ISO. Each approx 1/30th at F2.8. Full frame: Digilux 2: Digilux 3: Paul.
spylaw4 Posted November 9, 2006 Author Share #10 Posted November 9, 2006 That's interesting Paul. I also wonder what the differences are between the various country versions - apart possibly from the primary language of the instruction manual - insome case could the on screen dislay be in non-english? spylaw4 Posted November 9, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted November 9, 2006 Assuming you processed each one the same way (were they shot in RAW or in Jpeg?) the D3 cropped image appears to show less noise, which is heartening. Also the colours seem to be more saturated - if you were shooting in jpeg, were the settings the same on each camera? Thanks for these posts - I look forward to seeing more after you've had more time.
Enrique Santa Posted November 9, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 9, 2006 Agree with you Brian. Is more focused the digilux 2?. Thank you very much for the first pics. I´ll wait to see your test on monday.
dwcolvin Posted November 12, 2006 Share #13 Posted November 12, 2006 OK. It arrived as promised.Very nice. I'm in awe of someone with the patience to actually photograph a new camera still in the box, rather than dive in like a wide-eyed child on Christmas morning. The Little Brown Truck brings mine tomorrow morning.
robo48 Posted November 13, 2006 Share #14 Posted November 13, 2006 I'm in awe of someone with the patience to actually photograph a new camera still in the box, rather than dive in like a wide-eyed child on Christmas morning. The Little Brown Truck brings mine tomorrow morning. I picked mine up Saturday afternoon on the way to the airport. Because of the stop I was running late for my flight. In my rush I lelt the camera on the back seat of my car in the airport parking lot. Maddening! Oh well, I'll be back on Friday.

Ferry Man Posted November 13, 2006 Share #17 Posted November 13, 2006 I confess I've had a very busy weekend and haven't had much time to post any tests but I'll try and volunteer some thoughts. I have used the new Digilux 3 extensively for a few days and I love it. Here's why you need a Digilux 3 over a 2: SLR viewfinder. For me the most important, it's so much better. Interchangeable lenses. Increase to 7.5 megapixels. OIS. There you go, that's all the reasons you need isn't it?
Ferry Man Posted November 13, 2006 Share #18 Posted November 13, 2006 Here's an amateurish effort at comparison. The first shot shows full frame. Natural sunlight through a window. Each shot at approx 80mm (eqv). Digilux 2 at 400 ISO Digilux 3 at 400 ISO Digilux 3 at 100 ISO All shot as JPEG's at highest resolution and least compression. What does it show? The new camera has less noise but maybe lost the sharpness edge? I have find in very large magnification tests I've tried that there seems very little difference in resolving power between the 2 and the 3. The extra pixels seem to make strangely little difference. Ferry Man Posted November 13, 2006 Share #19 Posted November 13, 2006 I've never used a camera with OIS before but wow, it works. Here's some samples. Each shot at 1/5th sec. Hand held. Digilux 2: Digilux 3 (with OIS Mode 2): I'll admit that last shot was the sharper of two I took but the results are amazing. I think you find you can hand hold 1/2 a second or more with ease. spylaw4 Posted November 13, 2006 Author Share #20 Posted November 13, 2006 Smart pair of shoes Paul! Certainly less noise but the D3 shots do look a bit less sharp. However you don't say what the jpeg settings are on each camera, maybe the D3 needs to have the sharpening turned up a bit relative to the D2?.
