efftee Posted July 12, 2009 Share #21 Posted July 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I see, so you bypassed the local dealer to buy from Hong Kong at (presumably) lower cost than in Thailand and are now complaining that the local dealer wants to charge you to ship the camera to Solms. What do you think they are, a charity? Mark, Schmidt is the Leica dealer in Thailand and Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and not sure how many other countries. They could have different shareholders but it's still the same company.
Advertisement Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Hi efftee, Take a look here The M8 "international" warranty. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
efftee Posted July 12, 2009 Share #22 Posted July 12, 2009 Mark, Efftee and Ict, thanks for your comments. Efftee and Ict, as I said earlier, the shop is an authorised dealer whose name even appears in the Leica website. They gave me a regular Leica international warranty card with the shop's receipt, and the camera serial number allowed me to register for international warranty on the Schmidt website - so I really do not think that it is a grey import. Ed, a gray import doesn't mean it's a 'fake' or anything, it's still a Leica and you can register it online. Just that it was not supplied by the authorized dealer, that's all. I've been told by someone at Schmidt that there are authorized resellers who do carry and offer such gray imports for sale in their shops. It's a little late now but a Schmidt set would have a Schmidt sticker and feedback form addressed to Schmidt Marketing in the packaging. Not that it would make a difference now but you might want to have a check for any future issues.
edinsiam Posted July 12, 2009 Author Share #23 Posted July 12, 2009 The warranty doesn't say that Leica will pay for the M8 to be shipped back to them. What it does say is... "When submitting claims under warranty, please return the LEICA M8 together with the Warranty Card and a description to the Leica Camera AG or a Leica Camera Agency". The 'agency' in this case appears to be the Leica subsidiary rather than a dealer - see this page for an example... Leica Camera AG - Service - worldwide network The warranty then goes on to say that if you are are abroad you can use the local agency in the country you're in rather than the one in the country where the camera was bought. IMHO your 'problem' lies with the dealer who isn't prepared to take the financial hit of shipping the camera back to Solms. Which if he isn't going to get paid for it from Leica seems quite reasonable. Steve, thank you for your message. I found the the people whom I took my camera to exactly through the link that you are giving me. They are listed as 'agents' on this list, and, when I got to their office, I discovered there are also the Schmidt dealers for this country. ArtZ, thank you for your suggestion. I am not sure I understood what you mean, but I have already contacted Solms and they said that they are 'not involved with the terms of the dealers' (I pasted their reply above), so I doubt that they would be willing to pay for it. Efftee, thanks for the info regarding grey imports. I just checked inside the camera box, and a found a Schmidt form with a silver round Schmidt sticker on it - I guess this is what you were referring to. Do you think I should show this document to my local Schmidt dealer? I really can't recall if I did show it to them when I brought them the camera. Ed If your M8 is a Schmidt supplied unit, they should already know from your serial number and warranty card info. You can try to call them and demand an explanation; maybe a senior executive could give you a satisfactory answer. Personally, I think it's wrong to levy a surcharge when it's purchased from the same company, albeit a different country. I don't know what you could do if they insisted though. Such a shame. edinsiam Posted July 15, 2009 Author Share #25 Posted July 15, 2009 One last update, just for the record. The head office of Schmidt in Hong Kong has just confirmed to me that their warranties never cover shipping costs to a Leica repair unit. I still cannot comprehend how a customer can be charged extra costs after an item that they provide already causes him much trouble, but perhaps it's just me. So just keep this policy in mind if you are considering buying Leica in Asia. Thank you for reading. Ed
