Leitz Macro Elmar 4/100 R

Please can anyone give me some info about this older lens. A friend of mine has acquired one, and he is puzzled about the extra green scale on the focus ring. It appears to be calibrated in terms of image ratio, as distinct from focus distance, but, based on the focal length of the lens, and the "corresponding" conventional focus distance scale, it must clearly relate to use of the lens with a supplementary macro device. My question is therefore, which macro device does this scale refer to? Is it one of the Elpro lenses, or is it the macro adapter, or the earlier rings? I know that the new Apo Macro Elmarit 2.8/100R can take only its own dedicated Elpro lens, and can't be used with any other device, but of course, I'm talking about a completely different earlier lens here. Serial number 3031xxx.

Any help much appreciated!

John,

the green scale indicates reproduction ratios when a dedicated extension tube is placed behind the lens. This tube consists of male and female bayonets and an aperture control and this is a '3 cam' device. The lens bayonets into the tube and then the tube to the camera. The tube has an aperture control ring on it that takes over from the one on the lens and maintains the f4 aperture.

The only marking on the tube is an orange '100' and LEITZ WETZLAR GERMANY in white.

Mine came with the lens and is I think only compatible with the older macro but someone may be able to confirm its suitability on the 100 apo, I would be surprised if it functioned.

I have never seen the tube for sale on its own.

With the tube you can get to a reproduction ration of 1:1.75.

I then use an Elpro 4 to get closer.

Hope this helps

Many thanks for this - exactly what I (or my friend) needed to know. I knew it might not be the present Macro Adapter because, according to Brian Bower's book, this takes you in as far as 1:1.6 (actually a bit closer than your device - but calibration not quite corresponding to the green scale on the lens).

The dedicated tube (14262) is 30mm long, as is the Macro-Adapter-R. You will see them for sale on the big auction site occasionally. The Macro-Adapter-R is more versatile, unless you are using a Leicaflex. The Macro-Adapter-R must be modified to fit the Leicaflexes, and even then you are stuck with stop-down metering.

If you are using a Leicaflex a better solution is to modify the 14262 (or the 14198 for the 60 macro) so that it can be used with other lenses. Send me a private message for more details.

Many thanks indeed for this. My friend has later R cameras and a 3-cam (non-ROM) Macro-Adapter-R, so this clearly is the answer for him, especially since its length is the same as the original dedicated tube.
