Insurance and Lens Serial Numbers

It occurred to me that I should be a bit smarter about this and get it all recorded. I bought many of these lenses used so I do not have a sales receipt. Also, many are not Leica lenses so cannot be recorded on Leica's website.

I was just going to write down the serial numbers but will that be enough if they get stolen or should I take photos of them? Or does it even matter?

I would suggest laying out all your booty out on a table with the serial numbers visable and take a digital picture of them all as a group and individually so the serial numbers are readable... Then attach the pics to an email to yourself... (your laptop could get stolen too!)

Do not email to your spouse!

LOL... wait is that advise for troubled relationships or just simply ... well never mind.

the group shot and individual serials sound good, though I figure having some Amazon.com invoices printed / scanned in with written on serials might be a good idea so there is some reference to what these serials are. :)

Good advice - especially the bit about not emailing the list to the wife.

I keep a folder on my server that gets backed up with my photos. It has a photo of the lens, closeup of the serial number, and a copy of the reciept if I have one. My insurance rider won't cover an individual item worth more than $5k (M8.2, Noctilux) unless I produce a receipt at the initiation of coverage.

The other benefit of recording serial numbers is that in the case of theft and recovery you can validate ownership, and could also make it slightly harder for a thief to sell to anyone but casual private buyer.

Low odds, I know. . . but better than no odds.

Pointcolville, what company do you have insurance with? I have a scheduled personal property rider to my regular home insurance but had to get an appraisal for every piece of equipment for which I didn't have a receipt, regardless of value.

I have a master Excel spreadsheet with Type, Manufacturer, Model, Color, Serial Nr, Date bought, and Remarks columns. All purchase receipts are scanned and I have photographs of the individual serial nrs.

Why not ask your insurance company? You'll also want to understand their rules on basic policy coverage vs separate "riders" for valuables, rules on loss value and depreciation, etc.
