marknorton Posted November 8, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 8, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Continuing the theme of taking pictures of the R-D1, I've taken these pictures with strong overhead illumination, ISO 320, 90/4 set to f11, tripod mounted and changed the WB setting, in sequence: Auto Incandescent 3000K Manual using a sheet of white paper Images re-sized in PS. Notice my R-D1 has a purple shutter dial as well...

marknorton Posted November 8, 2006 Author Share #2 Posted November 8, 2006 Auto is hopeless, 3000K is too pink, manual and WB preset are pretty close.
stunsworth Posted November 8, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 8, 2006 The incandescent looks pretty similar to manual, which is what I think would be expected. The auto looks off of course, but then so does my Canon 5D if I shoot under street lighting - the resulting images being very warm indeed.
reddawn Posted November 8, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 8, 2006 Hi mark, I think u've successfully convinced me to wait a while longer before for these issues to be ironed out completely before plonking down cash for a M8... this camera is unacceptable in its current incarnation if it is producing results like this. I'll live with my m6 + Canon DSLR for the time being
reddawn Posted November 8, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 8, 2006 Hi mark - why did u remove the Nikon images? I think it's a good benchmark for what a production professional camera at a similar price point should produce...
marknorton Posted November 8, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted November 8, 2006 And, sticking my neck out in a forum of Nikon-bashers, here's the same done on a D2X:

andrewrossphotographs Posted November 8, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 8, 2006 Mark Thanks for posting, when I tested the M8's white balance I felt is was just wrong and too variable in auto or fixed settings let alone between a sequence of shots too, hence my concerns in previous posts. I also tested it against the D2X too and got similar results, sorry to affirm this.
John Maio Posted November 8, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 8, 2006 Mark Thanks for posting, when I tested the M8's white balance I felt is was just wrong and too variable in auto or fixed settings let alone between a sequence of shots too, hence my concerns in previous posts. I also tested it against the D2X too and got similar results, sorry to affirm this. I too own a D2X and I remember that people jumped all over Nikon because it had a green cast. Many attributed that to Nikon's refusal to share its NEF secrets with the RAW converter manufacturers (including Adobe and Phase One) Some of you will recall that a website went up urging all makers to adopt open RAW conversion policies. Isn't it interesting how all that just faded away; RAW converters got upgraded and finally worked and Nikon quietly introduced firmware fixes that made the D2X one of the stable industry workhorses that it is today. Am I the only one with this recollection? Does anyone truly believe that Leica will *not* get this squared away? I've had my M8 2 days now and have been just awed by the images it is producing. petermcwerner Posted November 8, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 8, 2006 in sequence: Auto Incandescent 3000K Manual using a sheet of white paper Mark, intersting photos, thank you for investing all this time. May I just make a small improvement suggestion? It would be much clearer and easier to read and understand if you put the captions below each picture instead of all in the top. If you do not know how to achieve this (I noticed many people on this forum don't), I wrote an explanation in http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/8739-m8-low-light-level-photos-2.html Cheers Peter
marknorton Posted November 8, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted November 8, 2006 John There are lots of us who are thrilled with the images the M8 produces but it does seem that when the camera is subjected to specific tests, it comes up wanting. I've no doubt at all that Leica will address the issues but if there is going to be a hardware recall at some point, it's important that they do everything at once! Peter - thanks for the tips, I'll try it next time.
andrewrossphotographs Posted November 8, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 8, 2006 I too own a D2X and I remember that people jumped all over Nikon because it had a green cast..... .....I've had my M8 2 days now and have been just awed by the images it is producing. Hi John I remember that all too well, but the problems of the early D2X colour shift (I thought yellow!) were hardly as obvious and diverse as they seem with the WB/IR M8 "problems" at the moment. Perhaps and we all hope that this is the case, it will be resolved with a simple firmware upgrade; in the bigger picture, perhaps these problems are actually all linked and therefore firmware will fix it, or a simple change to the IR filter coating is needed, or both! Lets see what Leica does about it.......
