I just got back from taking some photos in a major emerging market city, when two punks tried grabbing my SL2 with 80/1.4 lens, which was hanging around my neck on a Luigi strap. Forcing me to take it off, for some silly reason I decided to swing it around, hitting one on the elbow and the other on the shoulder unexpectedly. After howls of pain and insults at me (it was luckily in a crowded location), they both decided to make their escape, leaving me with the camera unit. Taking it home and inspecting, there was no visble cosmetic or mechanical damage to either unit.

A very stupid reaction on my part, no doubt about it- however I am also mightily impressed by the solidity of the camera and lens.

Considering that the SL2 has been known to survive (though needing repairs) an ejection from an F4 Phantom and the lens has been known to survive an 80-foot fall down a cliff your experience is not surprising.

I also know of one photographer who deliberately used his M camera (I believe it was an M4) as a weapon, knocking a prospective thief out with no ill effect to the camera.

I remember a similar incident from the late 1960's - this one involved a Leica M2. I may have the photographer and the publications wrong but, if I recall, it was Thomas Höpker, at the time working for Stern or Spiegel, who got attacked during a student demonstration. What saved him was an M2 that he kept on swinging around his head, keeping the attackers at bay.....

Best,

Jan

Nice one. A few years back I read about a guy who was shooting at a UK railway station with a Nikon on a monopod when two ne'er-do-wells attempted to grab his kit.

This guy shoved the foot of the monopod into one attacker's stomach and gave the second a clout round the head with the camera swung round on the pod. They didn't hang around after that. :)

I had a similar experience in Amsterdam years ago. I was using a Contarex at the time, and, if I remember well, it had the 135mm f2.8 Sonnar mounted. Most effective. I held the "weapon" by the lens. I also think the R9 with the 80-200mm Vario-Elmar-R would work. But then, I remembered thet the R8 is heavier than the R9.
