Just got my new CV 15mm and was looking for an IR-cut for it. SInce I heard that there is a difference between the Leica made filters and other brands, eg B+W, etc, especially at the shorter focal length lenses, and the fact that Leica doesn't make a filter at 52mm size, anyone has any idea of what am I to do?

Look for a b+w IR-cut- filter 486-type, 52 mm diameter.

This should actually do the trick for EUR 60,00 - 70,00.

As far as I understand, a slim-filter is not necessary.

But my question to those who use this filter is:

Can a slimfilter easily be applied, or is it too >> fiddly << (spelling?)

due to the rigid lensshade ??

The 52mm B+W 486 is the filter to buy to put on the CV15mm

The one above looks like the regular one to me.

Should be easier than the slim- version to get in and out ...

I wonder if the slim one might be more flushed and thus, look better? ;)

Actually, my bigger concern is about a non-Leica IR-cut filter. I heard that there is a difference with other brands, B+W included, and it is accentuated with wide angle lenses, making more pronounced vignettes. Anyone with that experience?

You have to be careful with the slim filters. They have a larger outside diameter than the standard ones and that can cause problems with lens hoods. As an example I have a 24mm Elmarit and the lens hood won't fit onto the lens if I use a slim filter. Obviously with the 15mm lens the lens hood isn't removable, but it may be that the slim filter will foul the fixed hood.

The filter that I am using is the regular filter with No problems with vignetting. I just shot some images with a polarizer over the top yesterday again with really no vignetting.

Out of curiosity, is your CV15mm coded? If so, which lens did you code to? I was very tempted to go with the WATE but eventually succumbed to epand56's images from his CV15mm coded to an Elmarit 21mm. :)

Many thanks. :)

If B+W makes the only IR-cut filter in 52mm, what are your choices? Mess around with step-down adapters to shoehorn a Leica filter onto the lens? Not use a filter at all? Make your own?

And even if the B+W is not "perfect", is vignetting going to be the problem, or some kind of color shift gradient (which isn't vignetting)?

Heliopan makes a IR-cut filter in 52mm as well. In my experience, the B+W gives better results for the cyan borders (at least on my lens).

Hmm. Many questions. Not sure. That's what I heard; not vignetting but more pronounced vignetting, if present. I've not tried a darn thing yet though - the ink is still drying from the hand-code and have no access to 52mm filters. I just don't want to end up with a dumb move and get the wrong thing, you know.

If you don't code the lens and set the lens detection to "ON/UV/IR" then the camera will not corner correct color using its software. These were taken this week for work, full frame, nothing processed. Incidentally the green building wrapped section is the new addition and everything to the right will be renovated in the next phase of work.

B&H has 2 non-slim B+W (486) filters listed - a Digital UV/IR Blocking Glass Filter (Mfr 65-014688) and a B+W 52mm DIG PRO UV/IR (486) FILTER (Mfc 65-019758).

I checked the Schneider web site and the descriptions for both appear to be the same, except one seems to be in black and the other in chrome finish. Can anyone confirm if they are the exact same filter but only with finishing difference? Thanks.
