When is a flaw fatal?

I've had the M8 all of three days now. So much of the camera has been done so right. The haptics are good. The menu structure for changing settings is good. In fact, before receiving the camera, the fact that menus were used to change settings was one of my main concerns, but after a few days of practice, I find I can change the ISO and EV compensation almost as quickly as the RD-1. When everything goes well, it takes fantastic images using some fantastic lenses.

But... That sensor issue has me worried. I keep hearing the number '1 in a 100' shots ruined with the streaking. I think that is whistling past the graveyard. I think the ratio of compromised shots will be far larger than that. I also hear it is hard to get the camera to show this behavior. Not for me. The first shot I had with a bright light in it showed this flaw. I was not even trying to cause it to happen.

For a typical user shooting indoor candid shots, how many times are bright lights going to end up in the picture? I'm talking table lamps, lighting fixtures, etc. Having to consciously avoid putting these things in your frame just seems sort of ridiculous for a camera at this price point from a company whose reputation has been made on responsive, intuitive and easy-to-use equipment.

I need to use it carefully a while longer, but right now I feel like I just bought a car that on odd-numbered days needs to be hitched up to some Borat-style donkeys to pull me to work. What is the gag point where you return it for your money back because it just doesn't work as well as cameras costing half as much?

I really want to like this camera. I think Leica needs some resolution for this problem really soon.

There was a beautiful autumn moon out this morning. Perfect for a 90 cron and the M8, right? Not a shot you have to think twice about with a 5D for instance....

I'm sorry you have had this to such a marked degree. You have the "Leica 1 day Anniversary Edition M8"! I think you should contact them and let them know exactly the extent of your experience. It might be that your particular camera can be fixed in firmware and/or an updated profile but be prepared to make your case.

This issue, I'm sure will be solved within two weeks and probably within days. Still, with the ease you are getting the streaking, it seems to me that there might be a compounding problem with your particular camera.

Don't let this get you down. Just shoot some great pictures to make you feel thrilled. Meanwhile hang in there! Leica will get things right.

Good luck

Asher
