Hi, new to the forum. I have a C Lux-3, a V Lux-1 and now am getting a IIIc with a Summitar 5cm/f2 lens. I have an original owner's manual, but was wondering if there is anything I need to know that perhaps is not in the manual, like experience, etc?

Thanks.

I think you will face with difficulties to load the film. If you cut it carefully , attach to right roll securely and if you do this process without a hurry , you will be successful.

Dont forget to be sure that top left roll turning when you are preparing your next shot.

It means your film survived from its place on roll , if you dont see the top left screw do not turn when you are turning the right one

Be careful and be nice and slow to your lens when you are in and out it from its housing.

If I am not wrong , hektor , summitar and summicron is at the same family and they give super super shots. Find summitar , hektor and summicron diagrams at internet and find summicron is the child of summitar.

I think you bought best color lens leitz ever produced and use it frequently , develop your color film and print it byyourself because low quality development and printing can make you understand the lens wrong.

I was reading venetian color palette analysis at nap and i found that summitar coloring our picture like them. Look to Fausto Zonaro pictures , you will get the same results from your lens.

Go to a museum with lots of film and test your camera and come and compare your prints.

You will get super Da Vinci , Michelangelo ANATOMIC drawings like portraits and super pictures.

Summitar is one of the few lenses which its light entrance lens is a doublet. And the others until the last one. I believe with crafting the perfect refractive index difference with factory made glasses , they made a magic.

There are many patents from 1890 s to 1930s from Goerz and you will learn too many things from them at google free patents.

You will get very bright colors from reds oranges , yellows , sea , sky , even at winter.

This camera and lens is carrying renaissance color knowledge.

Dont mess with it.

And be careful when screwing the lens , sometimes it goes wrong

Summitar makes wonders at bulb light , take few darker shots and print them , develop them with different photograph house.

When you get the correct recipe , you will amaze and use it all your life.

Best ,

This is a lyrical description - thank you for that :)

Overall, I agree with Mustafa. Take care trimming the leader, practice loading and handling. I use my II primarily with Kodak 400CN, using Sunny-16 (or Sunny 11 as it is in the UK) to "meter", and have great fun with it.

See if you can find a copy of "The Leica Manual" or "The Leica Way" from the 1940s or early 1950s - they are invaluable as reference works for the "Barnack" (LTM) Leicas.

Oh - and enter the Barnack Challenge! :D

Well, I finally did run a roll of film through the camera. Reminder that it is a IIIc with a Summitor 5cm f/2. I also had a Leica Screw-In Skylight filter installed.

I took my time loading the film and I did not have any problems. I did trim the leader with a pair of scissors first.

Of course, I did take two shots without first extending the lens. I just forgot. I guess everyone has done that at first. I will be more careful about that in the future.

I was not completely sure of the exposure settings as I using the Sunny 16 rule. I think I was off a bit as I think most shots came out a tad underexposed in my opinion. I guess bracketing is in order for those really important shots.

Anyway, it was pleasant experience overall. I just love the mechanical nature of the camera and the authoritative sound that the shutter makes. People do take notice of you while using it, like what is that??? But of course, these are the digital point-and-shoot types. Don't get me wrong here, I also do have a C-Lux-3 which does an amazing job, often bettering my Nikon D100. But to not have to care about batteries and memory cards, and trying to make each shot count as there is only 24 or 36 per roll.

Here is one sample.
