Advertisement Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Hi dhsimmonds, Take a look here Crossing the Lagoon . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
john_r_smith Posted July 4, 2006 Share #2 Posted July 4, 2006 David this is a really lovely picture, full of light and movement. I like it a lot. How did you make this shot - is it a B/W jpeg or a colour conversion? John
dhsimmonds Posted July 4, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted July 4, 2006 Thank you John. It is a monochrome conversion from colour JPEG using desaturation and channels method. I usually just try looking at greyscale first, just to get some idea of how the image would look in monochrome. Sometimes (but rarely I have to say) the image looks good enough using just greyscale. gareth_c Posted July 4, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 4, 2006 A nice shot but I think it may have become overly compressed when you saved this for web. It is around 140kb I think but you are allowed larger files, well worth it for this shot I think.
firoze Posted July 4, 2006 Share #5 Posted July 4, 2006 Great shot David! What Gareth suggests is worth trying - the photo certainly merits it. Regards

dhsimmonds Posted July 4, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted July 4, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the advice Gareth & Firoze My first attempt at attaching a slightly larger file was rejected as being too large. I suspect that by reducing the already reduced image has over compressed the file. I have to admit that I don't get much practice in reducing image files......I am usually concerned in getting them up to a print size of 20" x16"! Incidentally this image was originally printed at 16"x12". Cheers, Dave
elansprint72 Posted July 4, 2006 Share #8 Posted July 4, 2006 Dave, If Canaletto had a digicam in 2006, this is what he would have produced. Compression problem I can relate to, sometimes the web is a poor showcase. Cheers, Pete.
wda Posted July 5, 2006 Share #9 Posted July 5, 2006 I like the dynamics of this shot. It works well in bw. David
dan_drabek Posted July 6, 2006 Share #10 Posted July 6, 2006 It's interesting seeing a gondola out in a chop. You usually see pictures of them in placid canals. I like the brisk look. DD
