nugat Posted May 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all filmheads, I bought one of the last Nikon coolscans 5000 ED. I am trying to master it. I am wondering if it's better to scan my color transparencies in TIFF or NEF formats. I use Lightroom 2.3 for post. My first appraisal is that TIFF is slightly grainier but holds more detail at 8-bit. At 16 bit it is more detailed and the grain also smoother! (looked especially at 100%). Except it's 128MB. What is the best work workflow: 1. scan in tiff or nef? 2. use 8-bit or 16-bit? 3. Use digital ICE normal or fine? 4. Use oversampling like 8x 16x? 5. Use any other tools when scanning (DEE, SIE, curves etc) or leave those operations to post in LR? I will be very grateful for your advice. richam Posted May 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 28, 2009 My personal preferences: 16 bit TIFF; all adjustments later in LR or Photoshop. File size is not much of a problem nowadays if you have plenty of RAM and a large Hard Disk. My Mac is 4GB Ram and 1TB Hard Disk. I don't use ICE since I scan silver based B&W almost all the time. Even on those rare occasions when I scan a dye-based negative, I leave ICE off and clean up later in LR or PS. I haven't seen any practical improvement with multiple scanning, so I leave it at 1x. offshore Posted May 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted May 28, 2009 I own the Coolscan V and scan 16 bit TIFF to 1TB external HD's then handle the files individually in PS3. After working on them in PS3 I save them as PSD files, which preserves the original data but is a smaller file and an excellent file to print from. I gave up on Nikon's software for the Coolscan as it would suddenly crash or decide it didn't want to scan B&W negs anymore so I switched to Vuescan and haven't had any problems. Vuescan does not have ICE and I did use it with the Nikon software when it was working and miss it as it really helped restore some very old negs of mine that were badly deteriorated. andybarton Posted May 28, 2009 Share #4 Posted May 28, 2009 Vuescan does gave ICE I'm not near my Mac at the moment, but it's on the second Tab, IIRC. It's called something different, though, but is still the same function
