sv1cec Posted May 22, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey guys, I just got my Leica M5 a couple of days ago, and I have a question for you experts. I definetely am going to need an eyepiece correction lens (-3 diopters) and after I shallowed hard when I heard the price from the local distributor (90 Euros!!!), I have a question for you guys. Does the correction lens screws inside the existing lens or do you have to first remove the existing lens and replace it with the correction lens? I can see that the existing lens must be removable, but I have no idea if it should be removed or not. I tried unscrewing it with my fingers, but it doesn't give. Any help before I get the pliers out?

doubice Posted May 22, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 22, 2009 Hello, Welcome to the Forum and congratulations on the M5 - it is a superb instrument! The correction lens will screw into the existing eyepiece, no reason to remove it. As to getting the pliers out - there are special tools that are more suitable and will not mar the finish - never use pliers on a camera; be it a Leica on anything else..... Best, Jan Thanks for the congrats, I appreciate it. The M5 was a dream of about 30 years, since I first saw it in Frankfurt airport. And thanks for the clarification on the eyepiece. I wasn't going to use the pliers, it was meant as a joke but I forgot to add a smilie. Again, many thanks

doubice Posted May 22, 2009 Share #5 Posted May 22, 2009 ........ it was meant as a joke but I forgot to add a smilie. Twentyfirst century communications..... Yes, unfortunately smilies, frownies, winkies etc. are the norm... As to tools - there is a fellow on eBay who is a lot cheaper than Micro Tools and has high quality product: *NewDesigned* Clamp x9 F/CLA Leica M2 M3 M4 M5 M6 M7 MP - eBay (item 170321513018 end time Jun-13-09 17:53:46 PDT) Best, Jan
sv1cec Posted May 23, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted May 23, 2009 Thanks for the links on the tools, I am a tool freak, so I think I'll order some, just to have them around. The reason I asked about the removability (is there such a word?) of the eyepiece, is because of the price I was quoted for the Leica item. I was wondering if an eyepiece from a different maker would fit the internal thread of the Leica, but I checked some (basically the Nikon ones) and it doesn't seem possible. It would be great if Nikon eyepiece lenses could fit, I have at least one of them around. I guess I'll have to fetch those 130 US$ they ask for the Leica eyepiece, after all. Many thanks for your answers folks, sincerely appreciated.
sv1cec Posted May 23, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted May 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Also, anyone knows if the eyepiece lenses for the M6, M4, M3 etc are interchangeable with the M5 or does it need a special one? There is a seller on ebay from Hong Kong who has these things at an attractive price, but it doesn't mention M5, only the other Leicas.
doubice Posted May 23, 2009 Share #8 Posted May 23, 2009 Also, anyone knows if the eyepiece lenses for the M6, M4, M3 etc are interchangeable with the M5 or does it need a special one? There is a seller on ebay from Hong Kong who has these things at an attractive price, but it doesn't mention M5, only the other Leicas. I was going to suggest the same but, you beat me to it. If the seller you are referring to is 'etefore', he knows Leica quite well. Only the title of the auction does not mention the M5; the text states that his finder accessories fit all M bodies. The eyepieces of all M bodies are indeed the same and the correction lenses offered by 'etefore' will fit your M5. Best, Jan
sv1cec Posted May 23, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted May 23, 2009 Jan, yes, it is etefore. OK, so I am going to order one from him. Many thanks!
sv1cec Posted May 24, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted May 24, 2009 One final question, 'cause I am totally confused with this matter of Leica eyepiece correction lenses. On my Nikons I use -3 diopter lenses and I see fine without my glasses. But my myopie is -2.5 diopters. What am I supposed to order for the Leica? A -3 one or a -2 one??? Many thanks for your help guys.
