CEYOO/CTOOM question

Another question from a Leica newbie:

I got this IIIf kit not long ago, which included a CEYOO flash bulb assembly. Found the 22.5 volt battery (Eveready), and then decided I didn't want to use it atop the camera, so I got a CTOOM flash bracket. It arrived today and I discovered that it didn't include the shoe. There are two small holes drilled where the shoe should be mounted.

Did I get an incomplete bracket assembly? What shoe should I get to put on the CTOOM? Or is there some other canonical means of mounting the flash on the bracket? I'm really trying to be period correct here, and I need some advice, please.

Thanks for reading.

Bill,

Yes, the CTOOM is supposed to have a shoe on top of the tilting bracket. Without the shoe, it cannot be used for its intended purpose - a flash bracket.

I would suggest you return it to the seller and demand a refund; without the shoe the bracket is unusable.

The other way to remedy the situation would be to get a cheap parts camera, remove its shoe and attach it to the CTOOM. The CTOOM was available in molded plastic and crackle finish metal - the metal version is more desireable and easier to fix.

Well, I was typing a response and other things came up, so I stopped. When I got back, I had begin to wonder if the plastic CTOOMs had the same shoe. So I googled and got an Ebay auction for a plastic CTOOM with the shoe prominently on display with the proper screws and all.

I'd paid $19.99 for the metal bracket, and I just paid $19.99 for a plastic bracket that has the shoe. All told, I'm out $38.98 for a working CTOOM. I see them listed for not that much south of $100.00 and those without a box. I think I just made out fairly well for less than $50.00

Dunno what I'll do with the plastic version. Given that I'll likely never use the flash with the IIIf, dunno if it makes any difference in any case. I just don't like having stuff that doesn't work as it should.

In any case, thanks for the response!

Bill,

You can still get a cheap parts camera (less than US$10.00), remove the shoe and attach it to the plastic CTOOM. Most camera shoes are held by 4 screws - you can tap and trill the top of the CTOOM or, drill the parts shoe to fit the CTOOM.

I would than sell the plastic CTOOM to recover some of the money spent to make the metal CTOOM complete... Or - keep it as a spare for the next Leica you will acquire.....;)
