jflachmann Posted November 4, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 4, 2006 Got mine on thursday. City of Bielefeld, Germany. It's a silver one. I think, my dealer was that excited than me, when we opend the box. Looks like a Leica, feels like a Leica, a wonderful camera. VG, Jens
wattsy Posted November 4, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 4, 2006 Received a black M8 on Thursday. I'm in the UK. Very happy so far but I haven't had the time to get to grips with Capture One so haven't played with the images as much as I'd like. I have a couple of nitpicks. First, I'm not overly impressed with the auto colour balance in non-daylight conditions (the magenta cast is now quite well documented but is a genuine 'issue'). You can say what you like about Canon but my 5D (and other DSLRs before that) provide much better white balancing straight out of the box. However, I expect a combination of better Capture One profiling and Leica firmware updates will sort this out in due course (better that Leica have got the camera out - even if it requires some further tweaking down the line - than they sit on it whilst perfecting it to the nth degree). Second, I've encountered my first bug (at least I assume that it is). Switching the camera on last night I noticed that all the menu parameters I had adjusted had reverted to the default factory settings. I can think of no reason why it should have done that (the battery has plenty of juice) and assume that maybe the camera 'crashed' at some point when I was operating it? Incidentally, I haven't encountered the banding problem but haven't yet shot the camera using speeds higher than ISO 640 (something I don't anticipate doing very often - if ever). Even at this speed the files are quite noisy but, being a film person at heart, this is something I rather welcome (I often use my 5D at ISO 800 or so to get a bit of 'texture' into my images). All in all, a very fine camera that fully justifies its place in the M line-up.
MSmelik Posted November 4, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 4, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have mine to: Silver with 28mm 2.8 and I like it. But before I bought I knew that in terms of performance-investment it is not a spectaculour buy. It's good, the quality is excellent, the touch and feel is great, but the end result doesn't justify the price paid, but deep in your hearts I think you all know that. Walker Posted November 4, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 4, 2006 Hi there, Got a call from my dealer here in Bergen, Norway. Camera in shop, ready for pick up today, six week ahead of schedule. And by the way: the importer told me that 40-50 M8s are presold here in Norway. He reports an extraordinary interest for this camera, and I really hope that this signals a turn of luck for Leica. I agree with some of you that cheaper equipment deliver just as good files, but to me that is not what this is about at all. To me, Leica is one of those few companies that try to deliver high quality along the whole value chain, including the photographer's. The concern with functional and distinguishing aesthetics is topping the whole package. Well, time to shop, charge and post a picture or two!
blovitch Posted November 4, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 4, 2006 Hello, Black M8. Tewkesbury Glos. UK. Have not installed capture one yet. Some dead or stuck pixels on the LCD, frame selection a little bit iffy. Lovely images.... I have a candle lit Wedding to shoot in a couple of weeks, and I intend to use the M8 for the whole job. Should yeild some lovely atmospheric images, all I need now is a Noctilux )
EricC Posted November 4, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 4, 2006 Picked mine up today. I was number 9 on the list with one premier dealer and was promised the next one in by another standard dealer who i know quite well. After reading all of the posts about people getting theirs i thought i would give a couple of off the beaten path dealers i knew of a call. I couldn't beleive it. the first i called had a Black M8 on the shelf waiting for someone to buy it. They didn't want to post it to me so i took a trip to get it this morning and now have the battery on charge, 3 hours, how long? It came with a Passport Application Form in the box, just passing this on as i seem to remember someone asking in another thread. Bests Eric
