m8 and flash

All the blurb I have read tells me about a new M-TTL mode of flash operation with a suitable 3502 adapter...

I have such an adapter and I have read the manual cover to cover, but find no mention of M-TTL...

I have a couple of Metz units and a 3502 M4 SCA shoe, but alas can find no information about flash operation, other than the limited text in the M8 manual..

Auto mode works nicely with the relevant information in the viewfinder and the ISO being transmitted to the Flash (Metz 54) but the TTL mode does not seem to work at all....

Any ideas...

I have now worked this out I think....

On my Metz flash there is a "Sub mode" called GNC underneath the Manual mode.

Selecting this sub mode on the flash activates a pre-flash when the shutter button is released follwed by the exposure and a second burst of flash.

Hey presto TTL flash on a Digital Lecia, something the R9 does not seem to be able to achive.

The result seems to be quite a natural looking exposure...I will try some daylight balanced flash shots tomorrow. I realise M photography is often not about flash units, but it is always handy to have...

Tim--

I don't have an M8 and I congratulate you on already working on the nitty-gritty on yours!

I've wondered about the flash as well for the same reasons as you, viz 1) the M8 manual says little about it; and 2) before the M8 was made, Metz obviously couldn't address the M8 functionality.

So only one question: To get the M-TTL benefits, all you need to do is set the flash for GNC? At that point it reads camera ISO etc, requires no other intervention from you?

Thanks!

Thanks Tim. I was also wandering how to make a 54 MZ-4 work on my new M8.

You need the new SCA 3502 M4 adapter and the 54-MZ4 will work in TTL mode. I ordered mine.

In the meantime, A-mode works fine but you need to report the f-stop chosen on the lens to the flash, just like in the gold old days.

Well, I am using an SCA 3502 M4, but with the simple TTL setting on the flash it just did not work. Changing to M (step 1) and switching in the sub menu to GNC (step 2) solved my problem. Is there another, maybe better way?
