Micha Meijer Posted May 8, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 8, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I'm going to purchase a beautiful MP soon and would like to keep the original base plate scratch-free. Therefore I'm trying to find a spare plate, but the only one (black paint) I found is for the M4 (see the attached image). Does anyone know if it will fit and work? Thanks, Micha Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Philippe D. Posted May 8, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 8, 2009 No. The base plates are a new model, especially the lock, since the M6. Besides, MP painted are beautiful when used.

PeterP Posted May 9, 2009 Share #4 Posted May 9, 2009 Just put strips of black electrical tape across the bottom of the place. That should protect the plate rather nicely. Cheers
rob_x2004 Posted May 9, 2009 Share #5 Posted May 9, 2009 Your MP is going to lose paint and scratch up as quick as you can look at it. THe base plate will be the least of your worries. If the camera is new the base plate will have a clear plastic cover that you can leave on and will pretty much keep the base new cept for the very edges. Make sure you understand what you are buying with the black paint finish, it is very very soft, it isnt like the black chrome on the M6. Anyway, good luck in keeping hte remainder of the camera pristine. Maybe you wont use it very much.
antistatic Posted May 9, 2009 Share #6 Posted May 9, 2009 Maybe you wont use it very much. Stirrer A half case will save the baseplate in mint- condition if such a thing matters to you. I am pretty gentle on my gear but after less than 12 months the brass is showing on the wind-on lever, the rewind lever, the shutter dial and part of the front edge of the top plate. The only reason there is not more wear is because my MP lives in a half case. I don't mind the wear as I am not interested in resale value because I will never sell this camera. I also think the glimpse of brass looks way cool. Like the unique fingerprint of my camera.

Now being astute I figured he would also want to keep the remainder of the camera just as pristine. Like you point out even well looked after and with a half case you have more brass showing on your body than would ever be exposed by a scratched base plate. Maybe the Micha doesnt understand black paint finish. In the past there have been worried new users come into forum questioning the longevity of their black paint purchases. Maybe needs to enquire about the MP3 finish or other alacarte options. Ps ... We are assuming BP from "the only one (black paint)" base plate he found. Maybe its all academic if Micha is going to buy chrome? ... I can hear Manuel calling.
Rolo Posted May 9, 2009 Share #10 Posted May 9, 2009 I like wear marks on my MP and M7, but dislike damage - scratches from metal press stud buttons, rub marks from other gear and stone surfaces. Black electrical tape is a good solution, but better still for the bottom and top plate is sticky clear plastic from the Hein Gericke motorcycle accessory shops. Heavy duty and cheap, they are normally used to prevent scuff marks and scratches on panniers and petrol tanks. Rolo
newsgrunt Posted May 9, 2009 Share #11 Posted May 9, 2009 What would be the reason one would want to keep the baseplate pristine when the body will surely receive some wear. If the camera is going to be used I'm not understanding the need for another plate. I actually considered for a very, very brief moment swapping baseplates when I first got my MP but came to my senses It's a camera, it'll get used, it's going to show. Enjoy using it, I know I do. Micha Meijer Posted May 10, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted May 10, 2009 Hi all, Thanks for the replies. I didn’t realize I was going to provoke such a discussion... First of all, I do understand what I’m buying, the black paint, the brassing. I’m not concerned about normal wear. But like Rolo said, I dislike damage or scratches. For instance: last week I put my M6 (without the plastic on the bottom, I use a spare base plate :-) ha!) on a wooden café table. All fine, except for this screw in the wood that I didn’t notice. Now it’s scratched. Of course, I can try to be more careful with unfamiliar surfaces in the future, but as this is going to be my only camera (selling the M6) I’ll be using it quite a lot. I thought about a half or full case (Luigi or Leica), but I think I prefer the camera naked. Maybe I’ll first have to ‘learn’ to use an MP... In the meantime, I think about ordering a base plate from Leica and just see what happens to it. Micha
