tommycrown Posted November 3, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone gotten hands on V-lux 1? Just wondering how IQ turns out compared to Panna FZ50~~~ If I have a choice between V-Lux 1 or D2, what should I go for? V-lux is fresh and just came out, but D2's value doesn't seem to go down under 1K! Thanks in advance! Tommy

bradreiman Posted November 3, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 3, 2006 theres some new pics from vlux1 in dpreview leica forum-better than i expected. i now believe the vlux1 is the proverbial "digilux3". i have a digilux2 and love it but so many limitations. the vlux seems to have more versatility ie:selective focus etc. if the files are close to digilux2 id jump on the vlux if i were you. 420mm fov is pretty good for long lens lovers. the juries out on iso performance but from the samples i just saw its better than digilux2 in that regard. ps-i saw a digilux2 at glazers in seattle recently for USD $650.00. a steal. i mentioned it here and another forum member snapped it up. good luck...b
leicavirgin Posted November 3, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 3, 2006 I ordered a V-Lux last week at a Leica demo, so i should have it soon. I was impressed with the 35-420mm optical zoom, the swiveling monitor, and the zoom and manual focusing on the barrel of the lens, giving the feel of an film camera. It has a more simplistic feel to it then the D-lux 2 I bought last year, although this might be comparing apples to oranges. I am anxious to receive it and try it out. spylaw4 Posted November 3, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 3, 2006 I had a brief try of a V-lux yesterday. Unfortunately the dealer had not received any Digilux3 so I could not do a true comparison, but I did have a look at the Pana version a couple of weeks ago. The V handles nicely but I still prefer my D2 and I would not swap. I'll post fuller comments in this thread later today.
B&W Posted November 3, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 3, 2006 I did play with Digilux 3 yesterday. It is very nice and the auto focus is very fast. If you like Digilux 2 – you will love Digilux 3 V-lux 1 is also nice but nothing like Digilux to or
bradreiman Posted November 3, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 3, 2006 i tend to disagree with above, respectfully of course. the vlux1 seems to continue the digilux 2 line with the fixed lens, evf (i think) etc, while the digilux 3 is an slr and a completely different animal than the digilux2-although the body and flash look very similar. the leica brochure vlux1 shots were horrendous but the ones i saw on dpreview leica forum, although small examples) looked pretty promising at that pricepoint....b
spylaw4 Posted November 3, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had a look at the dpreview samples and have to say that I found them pretty impressive - even the original full-size ones. I will wait to see the file results of the D3 before deciding whether or not to add a V-lux or move over to a D3 which will force a D2 sale regrettably. bradreiman Posted November 3, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 3, 2006 yeah brian-at that price if the files are up to snuff it will be better than digilux2. sentimentality comes into play of course but....
Guest stnami Posted November 3, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 3, 2006 .... yeeaaa, but it may be wothwhile keeping the D2 and mothballing it and in 2023 take a couple of happy snaps......could be a heap of fun
phlogiston1 Posted November 3, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 3, 2006 I want to know about the noise before I buy.
petermcwerner Posted November 3, 2006 Share #11 Posted November 3, 2006 If I have a choice between V-Lux 1 or D2, what should I go for?V-lux is fresh and just came out, but D2's value doesn't seem to go down under 1K! I would definitely go for the D2, Tommy. I used to have a Panasonic FZ20 with the 36 - 432mm (equiv.) F2.8 Leica Zoom. It was very bulky compared to the D2 and the image quality was much lower, especially noise even at low ISO. I don't know if the FZ50 aka V-Lux has a much improved performance. From the tests I read, the noise problem is still severe, and is only being masked by aggressive noise reduction. An inevitable side effect of noise reduction is that details are blurred or smeared. Also the V-Lux has a f/2.8-3.7 lens (Max aperture at long end of zoom only F3.7), while the D2 has a constant aperture 2.0 lens that is righlty acclaimed for its performance and has a beautiful color rendition. tommycrown Posted November 3, 2006 Author Share #12 Posted November 3, 2006 Dear Peter, Bradley, Susan, Jarle, and Brian, Big thanx to all of you! I do agree with Peter on the IQ issue as I pondered around dpreivew forum as well. I personally LIKE to believe that Vlux would deliver somewhat different quality than its sister model FZ50. Susan, plz share some of your pics if you can as you receive your camera upcoming week! Jarle, D2 may be a similar type of camera to Vlux, however, as what Brian said earlier, even the price point of D3 is not even compared to Vlux. Not only it is a true dSLR, but also the sensor + OVF?! For those lucky ones touched the Vlux earlier, how is the built quality like? If I take it everywhere for landscape purpose, would it be safe using mostly outside? Is it heavy and feel like dSLR? Or light like PS cameras? I have also considered Dlux 3, but I need VF even though it ISN'T an OVF:( Thanks again for your replies! Tommy
dNorm Posted November 3, 2006 Share #13 Posted November 3, 2006 Just to add my two cents (respectfully as well), the D2 has more of a traditional rangefinder 'feel' and traditional rangefinder focal lengths. While the V-Lux 1 shares similar technical characteristics such as an EVF and fixed lens, it is in a totally different category - super zoom. The feel and form factor are not that of a rangefinder like the D2, but of that of an 'alternative to dSLR' bridge camera. Thus far, I am finding that the rich color tonality of the D2 is missing from my D-Lux 3 as well as the V-Lux 1 images I've seen thus far. Not saying the latter two are bad, but I'm seeing intangible results from the images of the D2. Could it be larger pixel pitch, which allows for higher dynamic range and better color depth? YMMV -Norm i tend to disagree with above, respectfully of course. the vlux1 seems to continue the digilux 2 line with the fixed lens, evf (i think) etc, while the digilux 3 is an slr and a completely different animal than the digilux2-although the body and flash look very similar. the leica brochure vlux1 shots were horrendous but the ones i saw on dpreview leica forum, although small examples) looked pretty promising at that pricepoint....b

The LCD screen can be turned in several positions – witch is nice
spylaw4 Posted November 3, 2006 Share #15 Posted November 3, 2006 I had a go with a Digilux3 earlier today (pre-production version) - most impressive - much better IMO than its Pana equiv. I'll post up the Raw files I took later when I've dealt with them. Tommycrown, IMO the build quality of the V-lux is ok but not up to the D2. It's medium size and weight and quite nice to handle. But I still prefer my D2, and after handling the D3 ........ I'm going to start saving I think.

I see a lot of D2 on ebay now, but still the price is little to high IMHO. Thanks and I will look forward to see some of your shots from D3!
