johnastovall Posted April 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Where does the R-100 macro Elmar fall in the range of R lenses? What is the function of the R-100 TC? Can find it in Laney or any of my refrences. Is it a must have or just so-so? I've currently gotten an R 50 Summicron and APO 180/3.4 (E60) Telyte. I'm just wanting about 4 Lenses for this kit as I plan to also use them on my ff Canons.
Advertisement Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Hi johnastovall, Take a look here R-100 Macro Elmar?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wizard Posted April 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 28, 2009 The Macro-Elmar existed in two versions, one to be used exclusively as a bellows attachment, the other one as a regular R-lens. It was a good lens at its time, and still is today. However, its successor, the Apo Macro-Elmarit-R 2.8/100, is a better lens alltogether, higher speed AND higher optical quality, and is what I would consider as one of the must have's in the stable of Leica R-lenses. If you can afford it, go for the latter. Cheers, Andy
dkCambridgeshire Posted May 7, 2009 Share #3 Posted May 7, 2009 James lager used the 100mm f4 Macro Elmar Bellows R lens for most of his photos illustrating his acclaimed "Leica An Illustrated History" and "Leica Illustrated Guide" three volume book sets; the photos are superb. The 100mm Macro-Elmar R (with focusing mount) is optically identical to the bellows lens version. I used the bellows version for years and can vouch for its performance. Although the 100mm Apo-Macro f2.8 lens has a higher performance, it is probably not as versatile as the the 100mm f4 because the Apo lens is designed to be used with the rear element at a fixed distance from the film plane - thus is maybe not as suitable for high magnification bellows or extension tube use. The Apo lens has a dedicated Elpro converter for magnifications between 1:2 and 1.1:1 which fits onto the front of the lens - as distinct from using a tube or bellows on the rear. I have both lenses and plan to try some tests using both lenses on bellows - will be interesting to see how the lenses compare. If you decide to acquire a 100mm f4 Macro Elmar you will not be disappointed with it. BTW ... many users think that macro lenses should be stopped right down to f16 or f22 for maximum depth of field but this is not always necessary and the lenses will perform better at f8 and f11 if the subject depth allows a medium aperture to be used. Regarding R-100 TC .. not sure what this means unless it refers to the APO lens' Tele Converter ie the Elpro ? Cheers dunk
wildlightphoto Posted May 9, 2009 Share #4 Posted May 9, 2009 Regarding R-100 TC .. not sure what this means unless it refers to the APO lens' Tele Converter ie the Elpro ? The dedicated 30mm extension tube (14262)?
