bradreiman Posted November 2, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 2, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) i am going to make a statement here and it is only my opinion, yours may vary. I have been sort of against subscribing to ReidReviews as I believed the subscription model to be outside the "spirit" of the internet. Since the early days of the internet it has been widely determined that the internet be a place for the free dissemination of information (pornography of course flourished on a subscription basis). So-in my hunger for info on the M8 i bit the bullet and subscribed to Sean's site. I stand corrected and would like to extend an apology to Sean. Reading Sean's site without banners/popups what have you I have found it to be a relaxing, well designed, extremely informative resource. I realize that for a small price Sean has been able to give me an invaluable tool for making decisions about big ticket purchases and do so in a comfortable, clean and modern interface. So-my apologies to Sean and I recommend anyone interested in photography have a look. Informative and just plain enjoyable to read. Regards.....Bradley Reiman

Guest stevenrk Posted November 2, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 2, 2006 I agree completely! It's a fantastic site and of immense value for a small fee. Matt Well said Matt, and thank you Bradley for starting this thread. Sean's reviews are simply thoughful and thought provoking reviews that reach far beyond the actual equipment -- and are very insighful about the equipment as well. His site is educational in the very best sense of the word. In addition to his site, he has been very generous in taking time to share his insights with us through various forums. To the extent that effort leads people to his site and to a decision to subscribe, good for him and for them. And if you want a sense of the quality of his writing, his reviews on Luminous Landscapes are excellent introductions -- and still very timely, for example with respect to lens selections using RFs. I don't know of anyone who has subscribed to his site that doesn't believe that they have gotten tremendous value for a very small investment. And that is unusual in today's world, a fact we have unfortunately been reminded of again recently.

dlc43 Posted November 2, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 2, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sean, I want to add my voice to this thread. I am a recent subscriber to your web site and have been very happy with your thorough and thoughtful reviews. In addition, you have been generous in replying to several questions of mine. Disregard naysayers elsewhere. You have many friends and admirers here. David
sc_john Posted November 2, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 2, 2006 I'll add my agreement that Reid Reviews are well worth the cost of admission. Not just for the M8 review, which is very thorough and informative, but for all of the other reviews that are full of incredible bits of knowledge/insight. Thanks Sean. smsmd Posted November 2, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 2, 2006 Hi all, This is my first post here, so I'll quickly introduce myself. I am a 51 yo absolutely not professional photographer. I have a fairly long history with manual cameras, esp. Nikon FM, but am pretty new to digital-I have a 5MP Olympus and a D-lux 2. I've been reading the site pretty religiously for the last few months, trying to learn as much as I can in general and on the M8 specifically. It was from this site and LL that I learned of RR and subscribed; I've also looked at the other personal sites authors here have posted. First, just a quick thanks to everyone for the huge amount information unknowingly passed my way! I sense many here are professionals and also sense that RR is aimed at that group to some degree, but for me, new to the M line, these sites have been a Godsend. I have no issue at all paying for RR and consider it to have been an excellent investment; I have learned far more than just the details re: a camera or lens from the reviews. The ability to read the responses from all of you here represents a degree of accessibility that makes me excited to look at the site every day. I do most of my photography in the backcountry of places like Yosemite, but also travel photography more broadly. I looked at DSLRs, but found them simply too bulky and heavy. For 3 days in Yosemite, my entire pack weighs about 7-8 lbs, so a large Canon just would not work. The M8 is much more along the lines of what I was looking for. The downside is that I have to buy the entire setup, guts, feathers and all, so the kids will be funding their education this year. I just finished reading the thread re: favorite lens choice for the M8 with interest to help with my next decision. This site and RR have made me comfortable that a place on the waiting list was needed despite not having a set of glass already. Sorry to take up too much bandwidth, but wanted to add that RR is also very worthwhile for a novice like me, not just the pros. This site and RR have taught me much already and I do not have any sense of massive commercialism-just great info from everyone. The combination is a bargain. steve
abrewer Posted November 2, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 2, 2006 Welcome to the Forum, Steve! ... & John, and David and Matt!!! It's great to have new members, and it's great to have current members that create synergy between the Forum and their own work (free or pay). There's plenty to be learned, for sure! Thanks. jbm Posted November 2, 2006 Share #11 Posted November 2, 2006 I am also a recent subscriber to RR, and I compleately agree with all the above comments. I couldn't have said it better. Thanks Sean. --Jim
Simon Larbalestier Posted November 2, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 2, 2006 The yearly subscription fee of $26.50 is less than you pay for a nights drinking and far more informative! Well written, thought provoking and lots of clear examples. Keep up the good work Sean
Jamie Roberts Posted November 2, 2006 Share #13 Posted November 2, 2006 Sean's work is simply exemplary. I'm very, very happy I subscribed!
rjans Posted November 2, 2006 Share #14 Posted November 2, 2006 I just subscribed. Very good reviews and usefull information, a pleasure to read. The subscription fee is low when you compare with the money spend on some magazines (mostly foreign) each month.
rfleica Posted November 2, 2006 Share #15 Posted November 2, 2006 where else do we see blow by blow comparisons of m8 with rds-1s and 5d in different forms of ambient light to really check out real-world blue channel issues? or the m8 with 28 elmarit/summicron/ultron etc? i also like sean being objective and avoiding hyperbole where it's not warranted. i have already heard one salesperson in a premier leica dealer say that the m8 was by far the best digital camera ever; so, rather than hear that guff, it's nice to get properly qualified, measured comments and reviews. sean, keep up the good work. frc Posted November 2, 2006 Share #16 Posted November 2, 2006 It's worth a try to spend the $ 26,50 on getting Sean drunk. That could possibly give an interesting and unaspected flow of information. cheers, Fr.
c6gowin Posted November 2, 2006 Share #17 Posted November 2, 2006 I too am a recent subscriber to this forum (my first post) and reidreviews. I agree that Sean's review site is excellent and very informative. The subscription price was very reasonable for the content provided. My only problem is that the small subscription fee has now cost me several thousands of dollars in the purchase of a M8 and 28, 2.8 asph, hopefully to arrive Saturday. I take comfort in knowing that my purchase decision was informed and not impulsive, thanks in large part to Sean. I try to monetarily support the websites and forums I enjoy by purchasing items they offer simply because I want them to be around for the long run and I understand nothing is free in this world. Sean's model is different in that you have to subscribe to see all of his reviews, but he contributes numerous free reviews on other sites and offers countless support to users on the various forums free of charge. It is pretty easy to look around and see the value of subscribing to his site without paying the money upfront. In my mind that is a fair approach and not much different than the other sites that make money from voluntary purchases from it's members - after all I voluntarily subscribed to Sean's site and glad I did.
