Advertisement Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Hi GaryBrighton, Take a look here Opinion of the 90mm Elmarit-M 2.8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
H. James Wolf Posted April 18, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 18, 2009 A wonderful lens and very sharp. Unfortunately, it's not as small as the Tele-elmarit or as fast as the Summicron. If it's fast enough for you, it's a great lens.
PeterP Posted April 18, 2009 Share #3 Posted April 18, 2009 An excellent lens that can usually be had used for a very good price.
tobey bilek Posted April 19, 2009 Share #4 Posted April 19, 2009 My peeve is it goes soft under 6 feet like the last two generations of 90 Summicron including the ASPH. Leica used to admit this in their literature. Now I am not talking soft focus soft, just not sharp like distance. The new 90 Elmar does not do this. Leica does not put out much informative literature any more. They want you to assume their products are perfect.
tgray Posted April 19, 2009 Share #5 Posted April 19, 2009 I've heard good things about it. I recently picked up a 90 and decided to go with the Macro Elmar M. It was between that or the 90 Summarit. I found a Summarit used for $700, which is a hair more than what the Elmarit-M goes for, but it was basically new, smaller, faster, and 6-bit coded. So the Summarit won over the Elmarit-M for me. On the other hand, the Macro Elmar M was even smaller, focused closer, and was optimized for close work. It sounds like a lot of the Leica 90's go a little soft close in, and that the Macro Elmar M doesn't. Since I planned on using the 90 closer in most of the time and also appreciated the even smaller size, the Macro Elmar M was the one for me. But, the Elmarit-M sounds like a great lens that you can pick up for not too much.
jpattison Posted April 19, 2009 Share #6 Posted April 19, 2009 Gary, Erwin Puts in his "Leica Lens Compendium" says the last version of the 90 Elmarit-M, made after 1990, is vastly improved, and it's close-up performance is as good as it's excellent infinity performance. I have one, and it is superb! My scanning isn't the best... John Welcome, dear visitor! Chuck Albertson Posted April 21, 2009 Share #7 Posted April 21, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had one for several years, and loved it. Very sharp, even wide open. Used it mostly for portraits. Great travel lens, very compact. Only got rid of it to trade up to a 90 f/2 ASPH, because I needed the extra stop. wizard Posted April 21, 2009 Share #8 Posted April 21, 2009 What do people think of this lens and what would be their favourite use for it? Trying to decide whether to get one for my M6. It's my most used 90mm lens (I also have f2 and f4 versions of the 90mm variety). Great combination of compact size, optical quality and moderate weight. Ideal as a travel lens, if you ask me. And it has a built-in hood, unlike the new Summarit. Andy
GaryBrighton Posted April 21, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted April 21, 2009 I'm hoping to get it this weekend and want to use it for some portrait work I'm doing with a local charity so all your opinions and experience with it seem to point out that it's a ood choice for this. cannik Posted April 26, 2009 Share #10 Posted April 26, 2009 used it on my M6 and the result is very sharp and accurate. light in hand and good companion to travel. But when used in .72x finder is a bit worrying.
jacarape Posted April 26, 2009 Share #11 Posted April 26, 2009 I think the results look "clinical", but it's a great lens, very affordable, very sharp.
leitz_not_leica Posted April 27, 2009 Share #12 Posted April 27, 2009 I think the results look "clinical", but it's a great lens, very affordable, very sharp. That's why I left it at home in storag and use a Fat Tele-Elmarit instead...rendering.
walt Posted April 29, 2009 Share #13 Posted April 29, 2009 used one for several years, traded it in for the new 75 2.5 which I prefer for wedding portraiture and general use. It's a bit on the softer side but a great lense and if your eyesight is good, not bad with a .72, preferably with a .85 finder. After many years using my m6 , and now mp, I think that 90mm is a tad too much for the m-system camera, hence why I stopped down to the 75 mm. Happy shooting, Wal. S Melbourne Australia. Double Negative Posted May 7, 2009 Share #14 Posted May 7, 2009 I love mine. I'm a ZM fan, but the 4/85 Tele-Tessar wasn't announced yet and even when it was I still prefer the Leica lens. It's a full stop faster at f/2.8 yet still about the same size (which is pretty compact, all things considered). Price-wise it's also a bargain, IMO. Good bargain for a really nice lens. damaso Posted May 9, 2009 Share #15 Posted May 9, 2009 I just got one and am quite please so far. Very compact and if you can get a clean version they are very sharp. Would recommend...
