Mauribix Posted April 15, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) For those of you that are still waiting for the new specific UV/IR filter to be available, I'v got a cheap solution to use an E55 UV/IR filter with your new Super Elmar. I needed to find a solution since I bought this lens for a specific work and I needed the lens to be filtered meanwhile, even if now I'm selling it on the buy&sell section of this forum.. You need to buy a step up ring 55->58 mm, and a step down 58->55 mm ring. Place the UV/IR E55mm filter (or whatever you want) in between the two stepping ring, et... voilà! On the M8 there's no vignetting at all, and the thickness of the step ring will give you enough space to avoid the filter to be touching the front element of the lens. N.B. The most important thing, is that you can still use the original threaded hood!! Ciao Maurizio Welcome, dear visitor! adan Posted April 15, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 15, 2009 Ingenious! Does it match the lens's external thread perfectly, or is there some binding?

sean_reid Posted April 15, 2009 Share #4 Posted April 15, 2009 Ingenious! Does it match the lens's external thread perfectly, or is there some binding? OT: Andy, how is life so far after the newspaper? Cheers, Sean
Mauribix Posted April 15, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted April 15, 2009 Ingenious! Does it match the lens's external thread perfectly, or is there some binding? It matches perfectly, the thread is absolutely standard. There's just a small "step"(or dent) at the end of the hood's thread that lock it when it's on the right place, and you may find that hood somehow "loose", in that case a small piece of tape should be more than enough to fix it on the stepping ring (personally I didn't do that). Ciao! Maurizio
adan Posted April 15, 2009 Share #6 Posted April 15, 2009 OT: Sean, check out the web site in my "signature". Multitasking. Have to run out in 45 minutes or so to cover a "tea party" tax protest. Thanks for asking. Maurizio: Right, Thanks.

hoppyman Posted April 16, 2009 Share #9 Posted April 16, 2009 Pure genius Maurizio! You are certain that it does not introduce any vignetting?? I guess this is only practical if you have a spare UV/IR to use. I don't know what the cost comparison is though. If the specialised model proved a lot dearer then maybe you could consider a slimline filter from BW with two adaptors, if it fits.
Mauribix Posted April 16, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted April 16, 2009 Simon, Geoff, thank you. BTW I'm sure that this solution doesn't add any vignetting to the lens on an M8. Even with the hood on. I needed to use this lens for a single work. Given the first results (bad) I had to find a quick way to use an uv/ir filter and that was what I tried. It worked well to my eyes and to my prints as well. Anyway, before shooting with this temporary solution, I made some shots of a white wall under different kind of light to be sure that it was not vignetting at all. I would probably post some shots later, as soon as I have time, since actually i'm writing from an iPhone. Cheers, Maurizio
sfokevin Posted April 18, 2009 Share #11 Posted April 18, 2009 Maurizio great fix... And great timing for me - I just got my SE18 today and there is no delivery date for the filter in sight... I had a 55mm from my 90 Cron to borrow... I put it all together as you have pictured - Fix together like a charm... One issue... Given the threading the filter is now backwards on the lens... Will this affect the filters effectiveness?
Mauribix Posted April 18, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted April 18, 2009 I'm glad it worked for you too Kevin! BTW, even if my tests have no scientific value, I couldn't see any visible difference under different kind of light in using the filter backwards on the lens. I can't remember now exactly, but I'm quite sure that it was discussed in the past, and someone gave a scientific explanation to this. Something concerning absorptive and reflective IR filters... Bundestrainer Posted March 25, 2011 Share #13 Posted March 25, 2011 @ Maurabix: Could you please let me know what equipment I would need if I want to use my 77 mm filter (don't want to buy the expensive Leica 14484)?
tuanvo1982 Posted March 25, 2011 Share #14 Posted March 25, 2011 I have just claim 2 filters from Leica. E39 is for my 35mm cron and another filter is for Filter UV/IR for M 18mm/f3.8 (13422). I just think it is the most expensive then I order , it may be useful to you.
