CropsKarl Posted April 13, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 13, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. There is lots of great information here. I enjoy just browsing and reading everything. Thanks to everyone! I have D-Lux 4 and I love it (had the Lumix LX-1 before that). I just bought the CF-22 to go with it. I took some shots of kids this weekend using the flash in TTL mode. Worked very well for fill flash. In dark situations it worked pretty well, but many shots were overexposed - generally in situations where you would expect it. Pretty typical for TTL flash. But when I tried to adjust the flash output, I found that there does not seem to be any way to do that. You have the option of switching the camera and flash over to manual mode and controlling exposure that way. But I just want to use the auto/ TTL capability but reduce flash output. Flash output is not covered in the flash instruction booklet, except for the choice between two manual output levels (M or M-lo). When usning flash in any of the auto modes (S, A, P, Snapshot) adjusting the exposure compensation doesn't have any effect - the camera adjusts shutter and f for ambient light conditions, but doesn't modify flash output. And I can't find any kind of separate flash output feature in any of the camera menus, buttons, or literature. I've tried using exposure comp with all the auto modes, and flash output is unaffected in all cases. I have the current firmware for the camera (1.2, I think). I hope I'm just missing it somewhere. Any ideas out there? Work arounds? Or will I be using my flash in manual mode at all times? Its a pretty significant omission by Leica if the Dlux 4/ CF-22 combo doesn't have the capability to adjust TTL exposure.
Advertisement Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 Hi CropsKarl, Take a look here CF-22 flash output. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Nicoleica Posted April 13, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 13, 2009 Hi, have you tried using the flash output compensation as described on page 38 of the user manual? I mostly use a setting of -2/3 ev. I believe that this setting should also apply when the CF22 is attached, although I can't say for certain. I hope that this is of help. Welcome, dear visitor! CropsKarl Posted April 13, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted April 13, 2009 Thank you very much! That does, in fact, work with the CF-22. What a relief. I was starting to experience some buyer's remorse. But now I'm back to full enjoyment.

But now I'm back to full enjoyment. Hi Karl, Just to find out from you, how good does the CF-22 works? Are those flash manageable and u got some samples of those pics ? Curios to get one too. Regards, Mish
kalina Posted April 13, 2009 Share #5 Posted April 13, 2009 Well, I've stated this in a previous post and I'll state it again. Either everyone who's bought a CF-22 is out having a great time with it or they secretly don't want to admit that it's a lemon. I hope it's not the latter; I just wish more people would post their pictures. In any Nikon group I've been in, there are HUNDREDS of example images that pop up whenever a new camera or flash is introduced. I really, really do not see how useful a flash with a non-adjustable head is. This is a huge limitation and why I believe the CF-22 should've been priced accordingly. CropsKarl Posted April 13, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted April 13, 2009 I don't have any true flash shots that really show how the flash performs. Here is one where it did a nice job as a fill flash, though. If I were picking a camera to take somewhere and I knew there would be a lot of flash use, I don't think I would take the DL4 w/ CF-22. I would take my SLR with the great big flash... bigger buttons, lots of bounce options, etc... But I think the CF-22 is worthwhile. It is significantly more powerful than the built in flash, giving you a lot more range. I'll use it for evening or shadowy outdoor scenes and it will let me light up subjects that are fairly distant (compared to the on-camera flash). And its small enough that the whole kit is still pocket size - which is why I bought the compact camera in the first place. Certainly it has limitations, but a reasonable compromise for me. kalina Posted April 15, 2009 Share #7 Posted April 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I appreciate your efforts in capturing this image. Even a fill-flash shot is a true flash shot in my book because it serves a purpose with the flash. I am interested in seeing how the camera responds to the diffuser so that we may get less of a blown-out look in indoor flash photos.
CropsKarl Posted April 21, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted April 21, 2009 Here is an indoor flash shot with the CF-22 w diffuser on. Flash output at -2/3 (thank you Nicoleica). Welcome, dear visitor! kalina Posted April 21, 2009 Share #9 Posted April 21, 2009 Okay, now I'm impressed because this image approaches something out of my D300. Good job, CropsKarl!
