I popped by NewLab in San Francisco today to get some film developed and was sadly informed that they will be closing and are not accepting any more items for processing. It's really too bad, I have heard great things about them over the years and had experienced their E6 processing, which seemed very solid.

The pro labs in general really seem to be having hard times.

Time to hunt for another local lab. My previous favorite, Calypso, moved from Santa Clara to Santa Cruz.

When I lived in the area and needed a substitute for my own bw darkroom work, Gamma (as noted in another post) was great. They used hand processing and did careful work. Also, very nice to deal with.

Hi, I thought I'd jump in here to confirm and add what I know about local Bay Area labs: For E6 try Lightwaves in San Francisco and (I think) Photoworks in S.F. New Lab themselves recommends A&I in LA. For black and white film processing and fiber based printing & toning: Photolab in Berkeley and Gamma in San Francisco. Also in San Francisco In Color 2 processes C41 and prints color film optically.

True there are many good pro labs gone now. In fact, throughout the country most photo labs of any sort have closed. But eventually we get down to the number that can be supported by the remaining customers. In the Bay Area we are lucky to have quite a few labs left. There are still many photographers shooting film and printing prints. For example, my company, Photolab in Berkeley, receives black and white film for processing from all over the U.S. The remaining labs work together to support each other and have found ways to survive and thrive by becoming specialized in what is now a niche market.
