NZDavid Posted April 3, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 3, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) How much do you pay to buy and develop film? I shoot mostly slide film. I am curious to know if there are wild variations. Here in New Zealand, I think processing is good value, but film costs more to buy. For the sake of simplicity, I have changed $NZ to $US at today's exchange rate. Location: Christchurch, New Zealand. Slide film, various sources: approx. $12 per 36 exp roll (eg, Fuji Astia 100F or Kodak E100G). Processing: My local lab (Kens Digital - Future Fresh Solutions) vows to be "the last man standing" when it comes to processing film. E6 processing, 36 exp, mounted: $11.60. E6 processing, 36 exp, mounted, plus 18MB CD: $30. Scanning, 18MB: 72c per slide.
Advertisement Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Hi NZDavid, Take a look here International film cost comparison. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted April 4, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 4, 2009 I pay less than $6 per roll for Astia, and would pay just over $6 for E100G Local processing, in and out in a day, costs about $15, unmounted. 18MB scans are just outrageously priced (and still only jpgs), so I would never have them done. I can make a 125MB 16bit scan at home in 5 minutes. Yesterday I bought some Delta 100 and Acros from a photographic warehouse in Manchester, and it cost me $6 per roll. from my normal supplier, it would be less than $
MattLain Posted April 4, 2009 Share #3 Posted April 4, 2009 In the UK I pay the equivalent of $6 per roll of Provia 400X and dev myself in a Jobo ATL-1000 at 60 rolls for $74 so thats $1.25 per roll!
andybarton Posted April 4, 2009 Share #4 Posted April 4, 2009 Which box of chemicals do you use Matt? I have been using the 5 litre Tetenal 3-bath, but have been thinking about going to a Kodak kit, as it's smaller, and more likely to be used before it expires. I have been using the 5 litre Tetenal 3-bath, but have been thinking about going to a Kodak kit, as it's smaller, and more likely to be used before it expires. Yeah, same for me. Tetenal 3-bath. I make up the full stock and it keeps for enough time for me to shoot 60 rolls - which is getting worryingly shorter every month/week. What's the name of the kodak kit? Not sure if I've ever come across it yet.
MattLain Posted April 4, 2009 Share #6 Posted April 4, 2009 I've just found a 5litre kodak kit on firstcall-photographic.co.uk but it keeps banging on about single use, perhaps more suited to small tank processing - even though it mentions the CPE2. It also appears to be 6-bath, which I'm sure could be more reliable, but the 3-bath kits have given me great results so far. On a different note, I found a very good looking 5litre C-41 kit from (Fuji)Hunt on the same website. At £23.67 that's a bargain!
christer Posted April 4, 2009 Share #7 Posted April 4, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) In Hamburg, Germany the department stores and the discount chains (a misnomer if there ever was one) charge twice the amount for film that the my specialist supplier charges. He of course charges postage, but that is less than the tube fare to go downtown. And you save time.

The "single use" bit means that you use the chemicals that you have made up, then throw them away. You don't reuse them, as you might, say, stop bath for b&w film. Photon42 Posted April 4, 2009 Share #9 Posted April 4, 2009 Switzerland: BW film: CHF 5.50 - 8 per roll, buying individual rolls. I believe I've bought 20 TRI-X for around CHF 90 last year. Processing slide film mounted: CHF 12 Processing C41: CHF 4.50 I try to avoid buying slide film in Switzerland. It's just too expensive. veraikon Posted April 4, 2009 Share #12 Posted April 4, 2009 Germany purchase on stores (online is more economic ) Slide 135-36: Fuji Sensia 100 135-36 10pieces 27-32 € Fuji Velvia 50 7.50-8.50€/pcs. Kodak Elitechrome 100 3.50-4.50 € /pcs. Fuji superia reala 100 3.80-4.50/pcs Consumer CN film in consumer markets: DM paradies 100/200/400 (= Kodak Farbwelt 100/200/400) 1.69€/2pcs. Fuji 200/400 (= Fuji???) 1.69 /2pcs (at Lidl) developping mass lab: 1.00- 2.95 € + 0.04-0.09 € /pic (take it as a contact print ) quality lab from 5-6 € B&W 135 I dont´t remember because I buy it in 17/30m rolls at fotoimpex in Berlin - the only I remember last time (last year) that a 120 Rollei 100 was about 1.60 or 1.80 . In Consumer markets only DM has B&W films in store (Agfa 100 and 400 at 2.50€). The advantage of the DM consumer market is in my opinion that from this chain you´ll find a depandance in nearly every city or village . (e.g. my home village (15.000 inhab) has no photo store but a DM. )
NZDavid Posted April 4, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted April 4, 2009 Thanks for responses so far. DIY E6 processing -- interesting, but I don't think chemicals or kits are available in NZ any more. Andy and others -- keep using it while it's there! Our film in NZ is pricey! I have bought from B&H in New York before, who are good, and Foto 24 in Germany. UK suppliers don''t seem to want to ship outside EU. I think it's worthwhile for film enthusiasts to shop around. BTW, 18MB scans I mentioned are JPGs. Custom and RAW scans cost a lot more, but I have been quite happy with JPGs for most purposes. I've thought of getting a scanner but having the lab do it certainly saves time. poynterama Posted April 6, 2009 Share #16 Posted April 6, 2009 I just put in a big fat order with B&H so this thread is timely! The best price I can find for a roll of Superia 36exp is about US$9......bit of a difference to the US$1.99 from B&H. FP4 is well over US$10 a roll. Nobody seemed to want to talk to me when I tried finding some Ektar..... Oh, and colour negative processing is about US$ 21.50 for a 36. ouch... NZDavid Posted April 6, 2009 Author Share #17 Posted April 6, 2009 Which goes to show it definitely pays to shop around. Perhaps firms should encourage more international buyers; with the internet, they could pick up some extra business.

The "Melbourne Silver Mine" Flickr group regularly get together to buy film in bulk from the US or UK. Lately it's been cheaper to buy from the UK, you'll find some discussion threads that lay out the costs if you join the group.
NZDavid Posted April 6, 2009 Author Share #19 Posted April 6, 2009 Thanks David, I'll check it out. I was wondering about something similar especially for Leica forum members. But that's another topic. Cheers, David
chango Posted April 8, 2009 Share #20 Posted April 8, 2009 Hi BW: I buy my films Ilford HP5 meter in England in Mathers of Lancashire. What is cheaper than buying them in Belgium. In Brussels, the bulk of 30 meters is 55 € for the store more ... honest !?!? Via Lancanshire of Mathers, the bulk comes to 45 € shipping and including changes. what gives 2.36 € the roll 135-36 exp. And without me to move. What more can you ask for? PS: For your Leica equipment, visit SH Photo (Germany), very good prices, fast service and effective Let us give our best addresses Links: Mathers of Lancashire SH Photo My Webside My Blog ------------------ Regards Jean-Marc
