MPerson Posted March 26, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 26, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) OK I am wavering. Seems my D-Lux 2 cannot escape from the wife's handbag and my GRD has a fault that is too expensive to repair, so I am looking at the DL4. I shoot a lot of high iso/low light and always B&W. Looking at the specs it seems ideal but in the real world what have you guys found the high ISOs to be like? Anyone posted some examples? I have to say one of the members who has influenced me in this is Marie-Louise (louloumum) with her images out of the DL4 and Red Dot Cameras have a decent offer on at the moment. Advertisement Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Hi MPerson, Take a look here Considering a D-Lux 4. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest Essemmlee Posted March 26, 2009 Share #2 Posted March 26, 2009 Not too brilliant above ISO 400 but passable if you like to simulate B & W grain. IQ is excellent below that level and the camera is a pleasure to use. Buy one; you won't regret it.
RPS Posted March 26, 2009 Share #3 Posted March 26, 2009 Andy: Steve Huff has written a comprehensive review of the D-Lux 4 and he publshes there a number of different images at various ISO settings ... you may find that review helpful. cobbslane Posted March 27, 2009 Share #5 Posted March 27, 2009 You mention the special offer by Red Dot Cameras at £529 incl free case.....take at look at Harrison Cameras in Sheffield. £499 incl free case in black or brown AND free next day delivery anywhere in UK/Euro by UPS. I just ordered one yesterday and it came this morning. Best price, best service - cannot be beaten. (NB work a call to stock check on cases though, lots of cameras and brown ones in but low on black.)
regedit Posted March 27, 2009 Share #6 Posted March 27, 2009 I found quite a big gap in noise between 200-400. 200 is clean, 400 is noisy. The good thing is that you accept the noise from 400 most likely is fine also 800 (on B&W looks like grain - mentioned above). so F2.0 and ISO 800 is a very good combination. if you force ISO to 800 you can open also I.EXPOSURE which a found an interesting IQ feature mostly on B&W shooting. my advice, go4it ...it's a brilliant camera. USA road racer Posted March 27, 2009 Share #7 Posted March 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have several cameras including a Leica VLux1. After buying a DLux4, I almost Never pick up anything but the DLux4!! I have yet to try everything on the camera in all modes and I got it in January!! The new firmware is great for an update if you get one with version 1.0. I take it everywhere with me. If you have a wide flat screen TV, take photos in 16:9 ratio & get the Panasonic HDTV cables.I got mine from Adorama. They were $34 USD instead of the Leica HD cables for $124 USD!! Used them last night for the first time on a Sharp 52" and was blown away by the images this camera produces! The photos were a little grainy (noisy) in color at ISO 800 but 400 were quite good considering how large they were being blown up! This is the way to see what a camera can do~ enlarging an image to 52" shows up everything!! But by all means, get one of these little cameras & you will never be disappointed! MPerson Posted March 29, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted March 29, 2009 Thanks for that guys it was most helpful. I am not convinced it is what I need as a replacement for the smaller GRD.
eddief Posted April 2, 2009 Share #9 Posted April 2, 2009 I am also considering a d lux 4 instead of carrying my bulkier dslr, but am wary of the drop in image quality.
