I only have one body which I bought new (an MP .072). I am considering buying a nice clean M3 as a BUB (Back Up Body). I will either go that route or get a Zeiss Ikon body as a BUB.

My lenses were purchased new.

I've been using Leicas since 1969 but they've always been too expensive for me to consider buying new, though in the last couple of years I've been able to make exceptions for the M8 (impatient to get a good compact digital camera and traded some nice Nikon gear) and 75mm Summarit (traded my 90mm Elmarit-M).

I bought two of my M and one R body new.

Also two or three of my lenses were purchased new, as was a Leicavit.

Then Leica started to raise their prices in to the stratosphere and lost me.

$4000 for a new body or $4200 for a 35 Lux Asph is too rich for my blood.

Same for the M8.2

I wanted an MP3 body, but that's not going to happen in the near future.

I buy new unless it isn't available new. If I am going to spend a few thousand for a lens then I wouldn't care to save a few hundred by buying used. The risk and lack of warranty and all that are just not worth the penny pinching.

I've purchased a few things new at list price -- a MP and 50mm Summilux asph when they first came out and a left over R6.2. If I had any type of delayed satisfaction, I've could of saved some money by waiting and searching around a bit.

The other lenses were purchased new at a tremendous savings when stores were either discontinuing their Leica stock or here this summer at the end of the analog R line. The 35mm and 90mm M lenses were purchased at about 30% off list and and R lenses were obtained all at 60-65% off list.

And then I purchased a used MP as a back up which I never use. But it's very pretty sitting up there on the shelf looking down at me.

Leica cameras and lenses is really my only one vice in life. I don't really feel too bad, because every blue moon I take a really good picture that justifies having it all.

Now the funny thing about it is that -- other than the R6.2 -- I could probably sell everything for more then what it originally cost me. I don't know if this will remain true, given the fluctuating interest in film, but I've always felt that people lose money with Leicas when they buy and sell, buy and sell, buy and sell; but if they buy and hold, and use, then everything is pretty and the world's in harmony. And as long as you use something, it's not a waste. Having said all that, I do need to slim down -- 3 cameras is just too much.

I bought my 28 Summicron, previous 50 lux asph and M8 ( since sold ) all new.

Everything else has been used.

But my MP-3, Leicavit, 50 Lux LHSA kit was pretty much brand new, the seller could not bring him self to use it or see it sit in a humidor so he sold to me in brand new condition for 5K.

There is simply no way I would pay the new prices for Leica gear today, they are insane.

Hello Everyone :) (this is my first post!).

I bought an R3 and Summicron 50mm used, in the early 90's from a Leica dealer..sold them a couple of years ago and bought an MP off ebay (mint/working perfectly) and a 35mm Lux ASPH used from a dealer (well used, but the glass is spotless and it works fine).

Just recently I bought a Panny LX3 (the one with Leica glass) new.

I think buying used is such great value, and the resale market for Leica is so strong that you don't lose much cash if you have to sell (you might even turn a profit!)...seems like the way to do things for me.

I can see that it would be nice to have the passport warranty you get when buying new, especially if you're a pro. Being an amateur this means less to me.

In the end though I love my MP so much that if I had to buy again...used or new would be fine. Some things are beyond cost...and Leica cameras fall into that category.

M6TTL .85 and 50 Cron were bought new and were all I used for a couple of years.

Picked up a like new M6TTL .72 as a second film carrier and other than a couple of new VC wides everything else Leica has been bought used. I'd really love to pick up a 35 Lux Asph, but even the used prices are out of sight these days.

I was lucky. Got mine as a dealer demo, a few years ago. Arrived pretty much new in the box, with a 1 year warranty. Even back then the demo unit wasn't cheap, but these days you'll have a hard time finding a used mint example for what I paid (roughly $1800).

I was lucky too. Found a dealer who had a well used one with perfect glass, cheap. If you do find one at a reasonable cost. Buy it! It's an incredible lens.

I keep an eye on all of the usual suspects...errr...outlets, but nothing's crossed my path in a range I can afford as yet. The longer I wait the larger the fund grows. These days the increments are much smaller though. At the rate I'm going I'll be able to buy it just in time to bequeath it to my daughter.
