For photojournalism, the WATE is just too slow in operation and aperture to gain me anything (except higher price, bigger size and more weight). When I shot film, I had available from Leica a 21mm FoV with an f/2.8 aperture, and I could stick it on the camera and shoot with no pauses for "a word from our menu". And it came from the factory ready to go - no Milich-izing or other hotrodding required. When Leica can provide that to me again, via a 16mm, prime, f/2.8 (f/3.4 in an absolute pinch) lens - or via a 24 x 36 sensor - I will be all over it. Back on topic: If the 18mm were f/2.8 - firm - I would be giving it strong consideration. At f/3.8 it is almost a full ISO slower, and I'd rather shoot my 21 f/2.8 @ 640/1250 than the 18 @ 1250/2500. Would have loved f/2.8 for this shot (and RF focusing) - just lucked out in terms of subject motion at 1/8th sec. (15mm c/v, ISO 1250, M8, f/4.5, 1/8th) Welcome, dear visitor! (15mm c/v, ISO 1250, M8, f/4.5, 1/8th) Adan It is not "f4-ish" it is f4 and that represents a half a stop (or is it quarter stop?) slower than the 18 which is hardly fast. Personally, I've been shooting at around dawn in low light levels with WATE just fine at iso640. And for reportage I don't know of a faster range-coupled 16mm lens available. The WATE is a small lens, imho. I was responding to the point in your post about "simplifying" your gear and learning to live with f3.8. I was proprosing that if you are willing to shop for s/h gear you can still have 3 focal lengths for not much more than a new 18/3.8.
