Mechanical issues with R4

I *hope* that this is the right area for this question but if not please move to proper forum.

I have a R4 that will no longer allow me to cock it, or advance film.

The button on the bottom that you press to release the (for the lack of the proper? term) thumb drive lever wont come back out and reset (you need to press this in order to unload the film of course) so the cocking lever moves freely.

Until I get this issue resolved the camera is pretty much useless to me and I have a *lot* of b&w film Id like to shoot! I've only used this camera a few times as I only had a lens for it for about a month and haven't any problems before.

I'm hoping someone had the same problem and didnt have to send it in for repairs that might be able to help me out on this issue. Any ideas? I'd rather not have to send it in as the repair cost would be too much for me at this time.

Hello, this may fix your problem. Open the back and roll the sprockets back & forth with your thumb or finger. I hope you'll find the rewind button will pop back out. (Sometimes the mechanism 'stops' at just the wrong plavce for the button to reset). This happens from time to time with 35mm cameras. Hope it works! JOT

JOT:

Thanks for your quick reply - I had already tried this and tried again with no luck but I will continue to try this in the hopes it helps. Im at work now so I will be able to work the sprocket a little bit.

Thanks again - I'll continue to do as you say.

Hmmnnn, interesting. I would've expected it to have done the trick. you shouldn't have to keep spinning the sprocket. Try moving the sprocket whilst also moving the film advance lever. Or, moving the sprocket whilst also pressing in the rewind button - then letting it go. I would expect this to be a simple mechanical hicup & easily solved. JOT

Yes I've tried to fire the shutter but nothing happens.

I've been messing with the camera before I hit send on this msg and NOW it seems to be working properly!

But its working. Im a happy Leica camper again!

Thanks for your help everyone - I appreciate it. This has never happened to me in the 30+ years of photography so I was at a loss.
