Film counter is stuck!

My MP's film counter is stuck, i.e., even after removing the baseplate, the film counter will not reset to 0. I don't hear the telltale "click" of the counter resetting when I remove the baseplate so I figure it's probably just a contact or switch that's jammed inside, but I can't seem to locate it. Can anyone provide any hints on what I might be able to do? I think my Passport warranty expires later this year so I could send it to Leica USA but I'd rather avoid having to send it off if it's something simple to fix myself.

Likewise the counter on my M6.

I, too, can't locate the "linkage" (never was mechanically inclined).

Have tried big blasts of canned air to no avail.

Still hoping someone knowledgeable will chime in.

Yep, the advance lever works just fine. The film advances fine, but the counter doesn't move and won't reset.

I emailed Leica USA a couple of weeks ago to ask them whether I had to return it for servicing and finally got a reply this morning — looks like it's going back. :(

Oh well, this is why I bought a second MP a couple of years ago. No more MP withdrawal while the other's off to New Jersey. :D

When all's said and done, let us know just what they fixed. In my case it seems to be related more to the baseplate removal and how that trips the counter-reset mechanism than to the counter dial itself. But that's a self-diagnosis, and whaddoiknow? Thanks.

On one of my M6's the film counter is not directly in line with the index markings. I spoke to a helpful guy at Milton Keynes (Leica UK) who informed me that this sometime happens and if I can live with it until it needs servicing so be it. If it bothered me too much he suggested I drop it in as it was only a half hour job which they could do whilst I wait. I am assuming the problem with your MP must be similar but by all means ring them if it will put your mind at rest

Just to finish up this thread, I finally got my MP back, a little over 10 weeks after I dropped it off at my local Leica dealer here in Montreal. (Incidentally, I didn't know I could send repairs that way. I've swallowed the FedEx charges to ship both of my MPs to New Jersey over the past couple of years, including a customs fee the second time I did it.)

Unlike in the past when I've sent my cameras directly to New Jersey myself, I didn't get an invoice listing what was fixed so I unfortunately can't say what was wrong with it in the end. When I originally dropped the camera off with the dealer in April and showed him what was wrong with it, he seemed to suggest it wouldn't be a trivial thing to fix (i.e., not fixable in-store).

When you take the baseplate off a little rod pops out. More then likely that rod is stuck in the IN position. You can see the rod on the wind up, advance lever, side of the camera.

Now I have no idea what happens if the counter goes to 36 (whatever) and doesn't get reset and then you load another roll of film in and keep on shooting. The counter wheel is spring load in some way, so it can spring back to -2 when you take the baseplate off.

So you may damage some other parts in the camera if it never gets reset and you keep on shooting.
