nickjj Posted February 27, 2009 Share #1 Posted February 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm taking delivery of a Titan D-Lux 4 kit tomorrow. I have both a Mac running the latest Apature and a PC which will have Capture One 4 and Photoshop CS3. I am more familiar with the PC workflow, as I use Capture One LE and Photoshop with my M8 DNG files. So which route would you recommend for RAW and jpeg work from the D-Lux 4? Specifically, can Apature handle the D-Lux 4 RAW files or would I have to convert them first? Many thanks!
Advertisement Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Hi nickjj, Take a look here D-LUX 4 - Mac or PC route?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
nickjj Posted February 28, 2009 Author Share #2 Posted February 28, 2009 I guess this is being ignored as it displays my relative ignorance. My understanding to date is that neither Aperture 2 nor CS3 support D-Lux 4 RAW files and that CS3 never will. So it looks like I use Capture One 4 on either the PC or the Mac to convert and take it from there. Or just shoot jpeg. It strikes me that the D-Lux 4 cannot be used for shallow depth of field work very easily and that the "son of M8" tag is a little absurd. Its key advantages for me are the faster lens and compact size but I intend to use it for snaps rather than serious stuff. For that reason, is there actually any decent argument for using RAW at all? Likaemtoo Posted February 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted February 28, 2009 As you would expect, there are pros and cons to both systems. I used to use a PC and photoshop, and a couple of years ago, I made the move to Mac, and then Aperture. I prefer the Mac, but I do miss PS and may end up getting it as well. I'm also eyeing some of the Nik software to see if it will do the job I'm looking to do. As far as my D-Lux 4, I've been quite happy with the jpegs. I've seen comparisons between the jpegs and raw, and there is little difference that I've been able to see. Of course, you can correct a lot of wrongs with raw that you can't with jpegs, but if you're careful with what you're doing, you should be more than happy with the jpegs. nickjj Posted February 28, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted February 28, 2009 Yes, Nik do seem to have some good software. The only one I have and have used for a few years now is Sharpener Pro which, in PS, works very well for me. These things are all so expensive though and I often feel we spend far too much time and money on such things when taking good pictures with good ideas behind them is where the effort should really be. Some of my favourite pics were taken with an Exa 50, standard lens, cheap chemicals and a dusty home projector. That may sound rich coming from a Leica owner. I got the chance to own one from an insurance claim when a Nikon FA and many lenses were stolen in a burglary and I like the ideas behind M precisely because it encourages you to get out there and keep it simple.
