Not sure where you've been, Jorge, but the release date was set for August 2009 from the very beginning.

Let's see: March, April, May, June, July...AUGUST!

Roadmap so far is the camera and the 4 "CS" (leaf shutter) lenses first, then the other lenses in no specified order

Well,

I asked because I was expecting it first quarter of this year. The reason I knew that was because I was aware of the project when it first got started or was even public and originally it was slated for sale this spring.

I know that there is competition out there and a late introduction could really affect sales. That being the case I was wondering if it was put on the back burners and jut kept alive for PR.

BTW, my original source is no longer around so I asked :)

Does anyone here really believe, hand on heart, that the S2 will be available for somebody outside Leica's inner circle of preferred pros and celebrities to actually buy and use (not just pre-order) in August? It's the kind of thing that we should run a sweepstake for. My guess is that the first shipping cameras for Joe Public will be available sometime early next year at the earliest. I can already visualise the explanations/excuses coming out in the summer from Leica's PR people (via sympathetic dealers) as to why the camera isn't ready for shipment.

I believe!

They need to get it out the door, and will, even if there are a few wrinkles left to iron out,

my crystal ball? no, but seeing the the state of the development at photokina last year, I think they were a year away and the longer it is delayed the more money is down the drain.

To me Leica is in the dark ages of R&D in this new dynamic time of digital. Lenses of course can seem to be timeless but sensors and I/O are not. Seems to me that Leica is trying to make a 8 year lifespan camera in a 3 year lifespan market. Tough to do.

I believe that it will be ready in late summer, although the August timeframe I haven't seen written anywhere. I thought it was September.

Don’t forget that September covers summer AND autumn. So the Leica translation goes like this:

summer = September

September = autumn

autumn = December

Cheers

Holger

I've certainly never seen August promised anywhere remotely official and had always understood that the launch was intended to be in 'late summer'. Stefan Trippe said in the recent LFI interview, when asked whether the S2 was still on track for a summer launch, that "summer lasts from March to September". At PMA Leica also mentioned that timeframe for the camera and first lenses, with the 35mm wide-angle following shortly after in "early fall".

As to whether 'launched' equals 'available to customers'......I don't know. Let's hope it does.

Folks,

just to be clear, autumn starts on September 21st (or so)....

If the S2 only arrives in October, then this is clearly autumn and NOT late summer (also in terms of days there is not much difference).

But in the end of the day I think we can congratulate Leica if the S2 arrives in 2009 ;):D:rolleyes:

Depends on how one defines "summer".

Summer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The "Fall" semester or quarter at most colleges I know of begins in mid-August. I usually think of it as Memorial Day (May 30) to Labor Day (average Sept. 4) - or the months the primary schools are closed. Of course, those are "Yank" holidays with no meaning in other countries.

If you live in the Southern Hemisphere, Summer 2009 ended last Friday (March 20 = Equinox), and the S2 is already late.

In that huge growing market of China - it better be ready by August 6 or it will be late.

I can't believe I'm even discussing this, oh what fun we have:).........but for the record the 2009 summer equinox occurs on September 22 (at 21:18 UTC, to be precise;)).

So, roughly, September is Summer and October is Autumn, or fall in North America (strictly speaking of course Holger is correct, September is both Summer and Autumn/Fall).

Since Leica have consistently said either "Summer" or "late Summer" for the S2 and first three lenses, and more recently "early fall" for the 35mm wide-angle, I see no conspiracy or lateness there (yet).

Personally I'd agree that sometime in 2009 would be acceptable.....but then, that still leaves the 'launched' v 'available' debate open for discussion:eek:

It will be on sale in September.

They are opening up their new boutique in Mayfair at the same time to handle the launch.

I tend to agree Andy, I've always had September in mind and the Mayfair store fits in nicely (for London) as hinted at in the BJP article.
