Dear all, dear Sean,

First of all : thank you so much Sean for your reviews of the M8 and your infinite patience in participating actively in all the threads (by the way, when do you sleep?!). I am amazed by the work done and, despite your enthusiasm for the M8, your objective analysis (in particular with respect to the noise at higher Iso levels).

I have one question for all of you who are testing the M8 : what about the tonal range? How are the deep shadows details? And highlights? I understand that noise is important but we have lived for the last decades with films and grain (and still now with the scanning of our negatives); but the tonal range and the ability for a camera to keep details in the last percentages of the blacks and of the whites seems to me critical (as a B&W photographer).

Any opinion?

Bonjour Jean-Marc,

Bienvenu - Welcome to the (new) Leica Camera Forum. I am going to a Leica demo day (une "journée Leica") on Friday (and Saturday) in Montreal. Leica Camera will be demonstrating the new M8. I will raise the issue you mentioned with the Leica reps and fellow Leica users (et j'ai beaucoup de questions à leur poser ...). .

Meanwhile, have a look at these web pages put together by the LHSA. Especially this picture taken with the M8 and Noctilux f/1: Leicas in Wetzlar. I think the M8 looks very promising!

Salutations,

John F.

Jean-Marc,

Thanks. It sounds like you are wondering, in part, about dynamic range. I'll be testing that in the next article.

Short answer? The tonal response of the M8 is wonderful. As always, the lens will play a large role in the specific kind of tonality the M8 creates.

Cheers,

Sean
