Ranger Rick Posted February 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted February 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) while not a critical element in deciding which one to go with, can I reasonable expect to use the "whole viewfinder" to essentially frame the picture with either of these focal lengths, or will I absolutely need a separate viewfinder? BTW, I have the standard .72 finder. Thanks, Rick
Advertisement Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Hi Ranger Rick, Take a look here M6 viewfinder with 21mm or 25mm- ??. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mindlessdocumentation Posted February 24, 2009 Share #2 Posted February 24, 2009 Hi, I've heard that the entirety of the .58 viewfinder (no lines) pretty much covers the 24mm range. Never tried it myself. The short answer is that you will want the additional finder for a .72 camera, unless you're really comfortable leaving the invisible 4mm or so (in the case of the 24/ZM25) to "fate". -David. batmobile Posted February 24, 2009 Share #3 Posted February 24, 2009 21mm is far wider and 25mm too wide for the 0.72 finder - for sure. a 0.72 perimeter is about right for 28mm if looking straight thru and not straining to find the corners. I shoot my MP-3 with a 28 and have decent framing. Just look thru your finder straight on and you will see what I mean. Bear in mind also that a 28 will capture at distance more than your 28 lines, so in effect you are left with the perimeter or possibly even more! 24/25 is about right for the entire 0.58 perimeter. 21 is much wider still. I got a 0.58 to used with a 28 and find teh FL much more of a pleasure and has a better intuitive feel on the 0.58. on the 0.72 it is useable but cramped. I had to read this about five times to decode it!
richam Posted February 24, 2009 Share #5 Posted February 24, 2009 I have the Leica 21-24-28 switchable finder. Bright with a bit of barrel distortion. This helps level the camera while shooting, something that is very helpful with the wide lenses.
john_s Posted February 24, 2009 Share #6 Posted February 24, 2009 while not a critical element in deciding which one to go with, can I reasonable expect to use the "whole viewfinder" to essentially frame the picture with either of these focal lengths, or will I absolutely need a separate viewfinder? BTW, I have the standard .72 finder. Thanks, Rick I use a ZM 25mm with a 0.72 M6 both with and without the Voigtlander 25mm viewfinder and I prefer using the viewfinder, but without, it's not too bad. With enough practice you can get close, but I find that the external viewfinder gives me more confidence about framing. Sometimes I leave the external viewfinder at home because I prefer the compactness without.

I can easily see that with "grab" shots. How are you liking that 25mm? I've heard good things about it.
atournas Posted February 28, 2009 Share #8 Posted February 28, 2009 I have been using a 21/2.8 ASPH on an M6 Classic 0.72 for years. I also have the 21mm viewfinder. My experience is that, when doing landscape work, the viewfinder is a must (it is unbelievably brilliant and you quickly get used to it). But, when shooting in the street, I don't bother with the viewfinder. What I do is calculate the field of horizontal coverage based on the distance from the subject. As a rule of thumb, the lens covers twice as much horizontal length as that distance. So, I compose through the built-in viewfinder; although, in many cases I by instinct raise the camera and shoot--no viewfinder used and then I crop a bit. You see, it's that wonderful depth of field with the super-wide lenses that helps in street photo. Paul
mindlessdocumentation Posted February 28, 2009 Share #9 Posted February 28, 2009 On a related note, I just picked up a 24mm and am going to use the older 24mm-only accessory viewfinder on my M6.
freusen Posted February 28, 2009 Share #10 Posted February 28, 2009 I use a M6 with a 0.85x viewfinder for 50mm and 90mm lenses and another one with a 0.58x viewfinder for 28mm and 35mm lenses. For 21mm and 24mm lenses I like it to use accessory finders, these are my finders: back row: Leica finders in silver metal: 21-28-35mm; middle row: Leica finders in black plastic: 21-24-28-35mm; front row: Voigtländer finders in silver metal: 28-35mm. Other finders I have are the Leica 21-24-28mm viewfinder, which is for sale and the Voigtländer 28-35mm minifinder, which is glued permanently on my Leica Ig. batmobile Posted March 5, 2009 Share #11 Posted March 5, 2009 yes, the 0.58 (for 25-35) and 0.85 for 50 and longer is ideal! The 0.72 is by far the best allrounder though if you plan on regularly shooting from 28-90. or 35/50. I dont like the 35mm lines on the 0.85 - too cramped.
