sweetsymphony19 Posted February 17, 2009 Share #1 Posted February 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi. I recently came across an assortment of old cameras in the basement and I would like to get them insured. Problem is, I have no frame of reference on this and don't know who to talk to. I know one or two of the cameras are Leicas and there are a couple of lenses to them and the rest are rolliflex I believe. I am in the Virginia, DC, Maryland area so if anyone knows of someone I could talk to about these cameras I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Brooke

The quickest and easiest way to get identification and advice here is to post some images of the camera equipment you have found. Alternatively try eBay completed auctions for an idea of value. bkyoung Posted February 19, 2009 Share #3 Posted February 19, 2009 The large camera stores in your area (Penn Camera in downtown DC, for example) can give you some prices, but under no circumstances (in my personal opinion) should you sell to them or take them too seriously. They will quote you the prices they would buy at, not replacement value. There are specialists, many of which monitor this forum (like Luigi) so posting pictures is a good idea. Some are generally in your area (I knew of one in Charlottesville, VA, but I don't know if he is still in business). Also check with well-known Leica servicers, like Sherry Krauter at Golden Touch (Sherry Krauter.com -- Home of the Golden Touch. ) and others. Another good source is the Leica Historical Society of America (: :LHSA : : Welcome to LHSA!). Also, look at KEH in Ohio (KEH Camera: Used Cameras, Digital Cameras, Film Cameras, Laptop Computers and More.), a commonly used reseller, which in my opinion has reasonable prices tested by the market. I feel embarrassed that I can't name a couple of sources in DC for you (where I grew up and worked professionally for a number of years), but it's been a while and many have gone out of business... So sad, the passage of time...
bkyoung Posted February 20, 2009 Share #4 Posted February 20, 2009 I just received this email, which might be of some help: KEH is coming to DC Photorama USA Washington D.C. Camera Show Sunday, March 1st, 2009 10am - 3pm Best Western Tysons/Westpark 8401 Westpark Dr McLean, Virginia 703-734-2800 Of course, they will most likely be looking to BUY equipment, not just value it.
