jalLee2001 Posted February 17, 2009 Share #1 Posted February 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have several questions; 1) does the Summarit 50 need a lens hood, (Puts feels that it does). 2) Is the only choice the $150 metal version or are there cheaper versions out there? These lenses are a pretty good deal right now with the rebates. There is not a lot of chances to play with these lenses in Singapore Thanks in Advance
Advertisement Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Hi jalLee2001, Take a look here Does the summarit line need lens hoods?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
akiralx Posted February 18, 2009 Share #2 Posted February 18, 2009 Yes, I think they do. No idea about 3rd party ones. Note that the 75 and 90 have the same hood. One of the main reasons I got rid of my 35 Summarit was the annoying unscrewing hood, a design flaw IMHO. There seems to be a consensus that the 35 and 75 are the best of the range. think Posted February 18, 2009 Share #3 Posted February 18, 2009 Do a search for Heavystar Hoods. An auction site seller with a line of aftermarket hoods. B&H, Adorama, etc sell inexpensive screw-in hoods from B&W... I often use one of these (with a slot that I milled in) on my Canon 50/1.2 as the original Canon hood is large and somewhat delicate. Good luck.

There is not a lot of chances to play with these lenses in Singapore Thanks in Advance I had the Summarit 35mm and used a $15 vented metal hood that was perfectly screwing into the E39 filter. I bought it on the Internet and that was totally like a Leica one. It worked perfectly.
thrice Posted February 19, 2009 Share #5 Posted February 19, 2009 You can argue than any lens benefits from a hood, but it depends on what type of shot you're taking and whether you think it would improve from less stray light or flare. I took two shots with the sole intention of getting objectionable flare while testing my 35 summarit and failed quite miserably: Sorry for the high contrast (lab developed/scanned) and boring content (no excuses).
