Hi

I am considering purchasing a D lux 4 but I am wondering if it is much different from the D lux 3. Or D lux 2 ?

I had a D lux 3 but sold it because I found for some reason I preferred my D Lux 2 .

I like the Idea of the view finder for the D lux 4 that is my main reason for considering the purchase. I have tried various ways of using a viewfinder on my D lux 2 but I don't want to do any permanent damage to the camera..

Does any body have a D lux 4 with the view finder ?

Does it make it easier to use the camera in sun shine ?

And what about focusing with the viewfinder ? how does that work ?

In addition to my D lux 2 I also have a Digilux 2 and Digilux 3 and am very pleased with all they all seem to have their different strengths and weaknesses .

Thank you in advance for your comments.

Paul,

We've had lots of threads about the strengths/weaknesses of the D-Lux 4 and whether its a worthwhile upgrade to the D-Lux 3. You may want to do a search and consider some of the earlier discussions.

I'm not sure there's a universal right/wrong answer, but generally speaking, the consensus seems to be that if you value low-light photography, and if you don't mind giving up the telephoto range of the lens, then the D-Lux 4 is likely to be a worthwhile upgrade. It has a faster lens, slightly larger sensor (but same number of pixels, so slightly larger pixels), better high ISO performance, and allows use of an external viewfinder via the hotshoe. The obvious disadvantages, besides cost of upgrade, would be the max telephoto of 60mm, and there is some barrel distortion and CA present at the widest angle of 24mm (controlled automatically in-camera when capturing JPG or on your Mac/PC via the RAW converter).

Finally, I use an external VF with the camera, and yes, it helps with bright sunlight. As for focusing, there's no connection between the VF and the camera's autofocus (or manual focus). So you can either compose with the VF and then glance down at the LCD to check focus confirmation/focus point, or you can set the auto-focus to center focus and trust the camera to get it right (ie, press the shutter button half down to lock focus/exposure, pause a second, then release the shutter). I generally do the latter, and it works out fine.

Jeff.
