FYI

In case you have not already read this, Leica USA recently (Oct 12) announced two new promotion programs. Here is the text from the Leica Camera website:

"Purchase any new M lens from an authorized USA-Canadian Leica dealer between October 1 and December 31, 2006, and you will receive 2 free vouchers - worth $125 each entitling you to upgrade your existing Leica M lenses by adding the 6-bit code. Lens conversion for customers will begin on Nov. 1, 2006.

To take advantage of this exciting, limited-time program, you must register your new Lieca M lens and submit any rebate claims within 30 days of purchase. Kindly return a copy of the original dated sales receipt and completed Leica USA warranty card along with the completed forms. After registration is completed, 2 vouchers for 6-bit coding will be sent to you. Please allow 6-8 weeks for processing. Lens conversion for customers will begin in November, 2006. Please contact Customer Serivce at (201) 995-0051 ext 236 for more information. This promotion is only in the United States of America and Canada."

Leica also announced a new promotion for the R9/DMR: "For a limited time, we will give you $500 when you buy a new Leica R9 or Digital-Modul-R outfit. This promotion is only in the United States of America and Canada. All purchasers must be made at an authorized Leica dealer in the USA or Canada."

I like their use of the term "only imaging system in the universe". They're obviously in touch with all those parallel life-forms who have confirmed that, yup, they haven't done a DMR so far.

It's not clear. Does this mean you can get $500 off an R9 and come back the next day and get $500 or a DMR. What does an "outfit" mean? Still, at least Leica in the US are showing their imagination. Leica UK are still snoozing in the corner unaware there's anything going on.

Thinking about this some more, it looks like it's a tweak to their original $1000 promotion for the R9+DMR, except you don't have to trade that old SLR you picked up at a yard-sale.

Now, by splitting it, the promotion will appeal more widely - film users who want another body or to add digital and new users getting in to R for the first time.
